Finn didn't push her away, nor did he lean into the touch.
He stood there like an empty, hollowed-out shell.
He kept his eyes on Sienna, but Sienna refused to meet his gaze.
She stared at the form, the emergency contact line still glaringly blank.
She picked up her pen and scrawled a single name across the space: Chloe.
"Ma'am, please provide your phone number."
Chloe eagerly rattled off a string of digits.
Sienna filled it in and looked up.
"Please hold onto these."
She handed all the medical paperwork directly to Chloe.
Chloe's smile grew even more saccharine.
"Thank you so much, Dr. Sterling. Come on, husband, let's go home."
She tugged on Finn's arm, but he didn't budge.
His eyes remained fixed on Sienna.
"Sienna," he whispered.
His voice was so quiet it sounded like he was talking to himself.
But that one name instantly shattered Chloe's perfectly sweet facade.
Her expression twisted into an ugly, jealous scowl.
Sienna finally looked up and met Finn's gaze.
Her eyes were totally devoid of emotion, so calm that Finn felt he was looking at a stranger.
"Mr. Fletcher, your examination is complete for the day. If you have any questions about the results, you can contact the front desk. I won't be handling your follow-up."
She paused for a brief second.
"Furthermore, please request a different physician for your next visit. I am no longer available."
She stepped aside and gestured toward the door, repeating the same motion she had used when he first arrived.
Only this time, she was kicking them out.
"Dr. Sterling," Chloe chimed in, her voice returning to its soft, condescendingly pitiful tone. "Thank you for taking such good care of our Finn."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Penny balled her hands into fists in the corner, fuming on Sienna's behalf.
This woman was so manipulative! She was the textbook definition of two-faced!
The realization sent a violent cramp through his chest, the pain so intense he physically doubled over.
Isaac immediately reached out and caught him by the arm.
Finn looked up, meeting Isaac's eyes.
Isaac froze. He had never seen someone look so utterly and completely broken.
The examination room was finally quiet.
Sienna stood by the bed, staring at the empty mattress.
The paper liner still bore the indented outline of where he had been sitting.
She reached out and smoothed the paper flat.
Her movements were agonizingly slow, as if she were afraid of disturbing the silence.
Her phone buzzed.
She ignored it.
It buzzed several more times in rapid succession.
Only then did she slowly reach into her pocket, pull out the phone, and glance at the screen.
It was from him...
