Finn didn't turn around.
His hand rested on the car door, pausing for just a second.
"Tomorrow," he said. "I don't want to talk tonight."
He opened the passenger door for Sienna, waited until she was settled, then walked around to the driver's side and started the engine.
In the rearview mirror, Maeve's figure shrank smaller and smaller. The streetlights hit her back, making her look much older than usual.
The night wind tugged at her coat, and she raised a hand to sweep her hair out of her face.
Finn's heart sank heavily in his chest.
Sienna noticed that despite his cold demeanor, Finn kept glancing at the rearview mirror.
He was watching Maeve.
He wasn't nearly as ruthless as he pretended to be.
Sienna spoke softly.
"You need a mother's love. You need her to care about you. Don't you?"
Finn's grip on the steering wheel tightened, but he didn't answer.
It took him a long time before he finally spoke.
"It's not as easy as I imagined. A mother's love might be incredibly simple for other people, but for me, it's a luxury."
Sienna studied the sharp, desolate contours of his profile.
Her heart ached for him.
"Why don't you go see what she has to say?"
Finn turned his head and looked at her.
Sienna said, "You want to hear it. Otherwise, you wouldn't be driving this slow."
Finn didn't argue.
He pulled the car over to the side of the road and killed the engine.
He sat in the driver's seat for a few seconds, then spun the steering wheel and drove right back.
Maeve was exactly where he left her, standing frozen like a statue.
Finn's eyes clearly wavered.
He pushed the car door open and stepped out.
Sienna sat inside, watching Finn's back through the windshield as he walked toward Maeve.
He stopped two paces away from her, keeping his distance.
