My uncle was usually a quiet man. He only opened up to me after we got to know each other better.
Seeing him so assertive for the first time made me laugh, but I assumed he was joking about setting me up.
“Okay, okay. I won’t be sad over him. You can rest easy, Uncle Julian.”
“I just got divorced; I don’t need a man. I need a career. And I think if a woman truly wants to be out of reach, it’s not about how many men she dates, or how rich they are. It’s about becoming rich herself.”
“The kind of rich where you’re at the top, where you can crush your ex-husband under your heel. That would be nice.”
It was just a shame that my ex-husband had started at the peak. He was too rich, too powerful, with an incredible business sense. If I wanted to crush him, my first step would have to be reincarnation, just to start on the same level.
Julian stared at me in surprise, then let out a low laugh, ruffling my hair.
“You’re very different from your mother. She would do anything for love. Your uncle supports you. Do whatever you want to do.”
I thought of my mother. She had loved my father too much, giving him everything, and in the end, all she got was illness.
In both my past life and this one, I was grateful that she never knew the younger sister she adored had been sleeping with her husband for two decades. The pain would have been unbearable… she might have gone mad.
I looked down at my phone, remembering what Rachel had said, and my gaze fell on Julian.
“Uncle Julian, did you send Horace a message asking about something? He was in an accident recently and doesn’t have his phone. Someone else told me. I do like houses. I love them. Even if it's just a small studio, I’d love it, as long as it’s mine. As long as it's my home.”
Julian looked at me, his brow furrowed in thought. He seemed to be struggling with something, but finally, he spoke.
“Zephyra, there’s something I need to tell you. I was going to tell you this morning, but then you were getting divorced, so I had your cousin pick you up first.”
I was confused. Seeing how serious he was, I felt a little nervous.
Please don’t let him be telling me he’s given up on the surgery.
“Yes. I have a video, here, look.”
My uncle carefully showed me a video of the villa, narrating as he did. “The property is over eleven hundred square meters, with twenty-two rooms. It’s all been renovated, but we still need to buy furniture.”
“The manager told me he informed you of all this, but you never replied. And when he tried to contact you, you blocked him… Do you not like it?”
Right now… I just wanted to scream. The shocking news was too much to process. I couldn’t believe my supposedly broke uncle had just gifted me a multi-million-dollar, possibly even nine-figure, mansion!
I couldn’t believe that the person who kept calling me from different numbers, claiming to be my manager and begging me to come home, wasn’t a scammer!
Had the world gone mad, or was it me? Had the divorce broken my brain?!
I stared at Julian in disbelief. “Uncle Julian, how are you so rich? I thought you were broke!”
Wasn’t he the uncle who had been disowned by his family, so poor he couldn’t even afford a shave, with disabled legs, so dejected he looked like he was about to give up on life? The broke Uncle Julian!
