I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 305

I was speechless.

Well, damn.

Was that for real? That kid Ryan was that much of a player?

But hold on. Steven saw him for two seconds this morning, and by tonight he already knows Ryan goes through ten girlfriends a month? How did he manage to dig all that up but not discover that his so-called "pretty boy" is my cousin?

And the way he was comparing himself, picking apart every detail… if I didn’t know he despised me, I’d almost think he sounded jealous.

I let out a cold snort. “Whether he can make me happy or not is none of your business. If you’re so concerned about my love life, why don’t you find someone you approve of? What about Myron?”

“Actually, now that I think about it, he might be a bit of a playboy, but at least he runs a successful company. He’s a little flamboyant for my taste, but he and my vixen-like looks would make a good pair. Most importantly, he’s a known quantity. He’s been nothing but kind and considerate to me since I started. He might make a pretty good husband.”

Steven’s breathing hitched, his voice tight. “Don’t even think about it. He’s not interested in you.”

Ha! Got him. He was afraid I’d actually go after Myron. Not only would that be humiliating for Steven, but the entire Lancaster family would probably lose face, since their families were so close.

Of course, I was just trying to get a rise out of him. I had no interest in remarrying, and Myron would never be interested in me.

I raised a delicate eyebrow and purred into the phone, settling back onto the sofa to enjoy my spicy crayfish.

“Oh, I don’t know about that. I seem to recall him saying that if you and I ever divorced, I should give him a chance.”

Steven let out a cold, sharp laugh. “I’ll say it again: he’s not interested. If you’re stupid enough to pursue him, you won’t like the consequences. I hope you’re not foolish enough to test me.”

Listen to him, all high and mighty. So impressive, threatening a woman.

“Tsk,” I clicked my tongue. “You know, I’m starting to think you have a thing for Myron. And he’s certainly your most loyal follower. Is this a mutual pining situation?”

My thoughts immediately drifted back to what Rachel had said, and a knot formed in my chest. I had told Horace more than once that we were best friends. He knew I didn’t have romantic feelings for him. We were too close, having grown up together like family. It was hard for love to grow from that kind of familiarity; otherwise, I wouldn’t have fallen for Steven at first sight. But now…

He was putting me in an impossible position. If it were anyone else, I would have shut them down without a second thought, cutting ties if necessary.

But this was Horace. And I owed him my life. The debt was too great. I couldn’t bring myself to hurt him.

In the end, I didn’t reply. I would deal with his competition situation first. Maybe if I could lessen my guilt, even just a little, I could face him again.

The next day, my body was still sore, but at least I could walk without much trouble. I went to the office to finalize a proposal with Myron. He was sipping an iced coffee, teasing me as usual.

“A proposal from you? How could there be any problems? I’m happy with it.”
