I remained silent.
They had three years together. But Steven and I had five years of marriage. The first time I found out he was seeing someone else, I had been just as devastated as Jacob was now, completely lost.
As for the sadness, I had already grieved in my past life. I would never waste another tear on Steven in this one.
Myron, driving, looked stressed. “Are you sure there isn’t some misunderstanding? Steven would never cheat!”
I toyed with a lock of my long hair, my voice lazy. “How can you cheat on someone you were never in love with in the first place?”
Myron was speechless. He seemed to want to argue but held his tongue. “I still think there’s a mistake,” he finally said. “I’m going to call Steven right now and get this sorted out. We can’t just believe what that woman said. Steven would never lead two women on. Anyone else, maybe, but not him. I…”
A cold smile touched my lips. “Why not? The facts are right in front of you. Don’t you dare call him. I don’t want to see him.”
“But—”
“Don’t talk about him, or you can get out and walk.”
Myron sighed, focusing on the road. I could see his handsome, troubled face in the rearview mirror, his brow deeply furrowed.
Jacob, overwhelmed by the alcohol and emotion, had drifted back to sleep.
My phone buzzed. It was the college friend I had contacted last night. I answered, a hint of a smile in my voice.
“How’s it going?”
I just watched, my own motives clear. I sent a text to Rachel, asking her to set up a meeting with the producers. Since she was already with them, she replied almost immediately. “Tomorrow night, 6:30. At the Baxo Unity Mall, restaurant number 135.”
Myron glanced at me in the rearview mirror. “Where are you going tomorrow?”
My eyes were still on my phone. “Baxo. I’m taking the day off. I’ll fill out the request form later.”
Myron didn’t object. After all, he was the one who had begged me to stay. He cleared his throat, a smile in his voice.
“What time is your flight? There’s a jewelry industry showcase tomorrow morning. If you’re flying in the afternoon or evening, could you go for me? Represent Star Corp., mingle a bit, maybe buy a few pieces. What do you say?”
