I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 350

Go?

My eyes widened in surprise.

No wonder Steven wanted the jade Go set. He needed it to negotiate with his business partner.

It also explained why he was at the auction. I remembered he disliked such events, but it turned out he had been there before, just not as a bidder. Like this time, he was there for a private transaction.

If that Go set was so important to him, why would he offer it to me?

My lips pressed together. "He probably already knows about your boss," I said gently. "I went to an auction today, and he was there too. He acquired a one-of-a-kind Gilded Jade Go Set. That should be right up your boss's alley, shouldn't it?"

Rachel's eyes widened in shock. "That's not just up his alley; Hugh would be laughing in his sleep! It seems your ex-husband has a few tricks up his sleeve after all. I underestimated him."

"Alright, I've got to go get to the airport. If the meeting goes well, I can stay here for a couple more days. If not, I'll have to head back to Ixia. You go see Horace. He's been waiting for you."

She pressed the key card into my hand, a flicker of awkwardness on her beautiful face.

"About what I said to you on the phone the other day… don't take it to heart. I was just…"

"I know," I interrupted, looking her in the eye. "It's okay. I'll have a good talk with him."

It wasn't just about whether feelings could develop between Horace and me. Personally, I had no desire to get entangled in another romance. It was too exhausting for the heart, mind, and soul.

Rachel hesitated for a moment, then nodded and turned to leave.

I took the key card and went to the hospital room. The premium suite was like a small apartment, equipped with everything. I knocked on the door, and it was opened by an elegant, stylish middle-aged woman with short, curly hair, wearing a pink cardigan.

This was Horace's mother, and also one of my own mother's closest friends before she passed away. Horace and I had grown up together, and Mrs. Spencer had always been very kind to me.

But after Horace's leg was injured, our relationship became strained. Still, she came to my mother's funeral, tears streaming down her face.

I knew she blamed me. If I put myself in her shoes, if my son had been hurt trying to save someone else, I would blame them too.

When she saw me, her face first registered surprise, then she managed a slight smile.

"That I'm recovering very well, of course. It's all thanks to you that my surgery was so successful, and I was able to keep my leg," he said with a radiant smile. Seeing my red-rimmed eyes, he couldn't help but gently flick my forehead. "There you go again. Don't cry. I'm fine, see?"

Mrs. Spencer covered her face with her hand and turned away.

I had been holding back my tears, but his words made them fall. The guilt was so intense it felt like it was spilling out of me. Even if he hadn't saved me this time, he had gotten into the accident because he had mistakenly thought I was in trouble and rushed to help.

I couldn't help but poke his chest.

"You're so… you're so frustrating. I'm doing perfectly fine; I don't need you to worry about me. Can't you think about yourself for once? You're about to become a huge star, with a brilliant career ahead of you, and right at this moment…"

Right at this crucial moment, he almost lost his life. His life was saved now, but what about his leg? It was hard enough for an able-bodied artist to make it, let alone someone in his condition. He had had such a bright future, a future he had been so excited about.

It felt like I had ruined his life all over again.

Before I could finish, he pulled me into a tight embrace. I could feel the warmth radiating from his chest.

His eyes were dark and deep, and his steady, powerful voice resonated from above my head, "..."
