Oh, so the Jones family was already in such dire straits, on the verge of collapse. It seemed they were doomed even without my intervention.
Good. I was happy to hear it.
Just as I was about to reply, Ryan beside me couldn't hold back any longer and launched into a tirade.
"That's bullshit! Zephyra is anything but ordinary. She's amazing, and she can live a better life on her own. And why does she have to marry Steven? You failed in your own business, you're the useless ones! How dare you blame Zephyra!"
"If you want help from the Lancaster family, why don't you marry into it yourselves? Why are you picking on Zephyra? Oh, right, Steven probably wouldn't look twice at you ugly hags. Especially you, old woman. Yuck, hideous! If I were Steven, I'd marry a dog before I married you!"
"You!" Janice's face stiffened with anger. She turned to Martin. "Martin, if Mr. Lancaster sees Zephyra with another man, he definitely won't agree to take her back. You don't really want to see the Jones family go bankrupt, do you?"
"Mr. Lancaster must have agreed to the divorce because Zephyra did something wrong. If she refuses to beg him, we should tie her up and take her to him to apologize! Let the Lancaster family deal with her. We can't delay this any longer. Now that she's here, it's time to act!"
I heard every word she said. My fury ignited, and I tilted my head back and laughed coldly.
So that was their plan.
If I willingly begged Steven to remarry me, they would leave me alone. If I refused, they would tie me up, drag me to him, and force me to beg for their sakes.
In both my past life and this one, I was nothing but a tool for the Jones family to exploit. In my past life, I loved Steven and was willing to please him. But not in this life. What made them think they could control me?
Martin roared, "What are you waiting for? Don't you want this month's salary?! Get that guy out of here! Cripple him! And seize the young miss!"
Several guards armed with riot forks charged at Ryan, snarling, ready to beat him senseless.
Just then, a hundred bodyguards in suits swarmed the area, a sea of black. The big guys at the front made short work of the security guards, knocking them to the ground. The rest bowed respectfully and shouted, "Mr. Lopez! Ms. Jones, we apologize for our delay!"
The shout was thunderous, and the tables turned in an instant.
Antonia, who had been watching from the sidelines, was stunned. "Holy crap, this kid has this much backup?!"
Janice and Martin's faces changed instantly. Martin caught the key point. "Mr. Lopez? You're from the Lopez family?! No wonder you call her 'sister.' I thought you two were having some kind of sordid affair."
Martin was livid. "Zephyra, you're out of control! Believe it or not, I will beat you!"
I scoffed. "I'm your daughter. You almost had me kidnapped. I'm upset, and I feel like breaking things in my own home. Is there a problem with that?"
Since the Jones family was already crumbling, I might as well add fuel to the fire.
Ryan pointed at Martin and smirked. "If he moves, hit him."
Once the hired men confirmed this was a family dispute, they relaxed and began smashing things without restraint. A few of them cleared a path for Ryan and me. Martin and Janice were seething, their chests heaving with rage, but they didn't dare say another word. Antonia was even more terrified.
I went inside first to find my mother's memorial tablet. I shouldn't have just taken her belongings last time; I should have taken the tablet as well.
As Ryan passed Martin, he suddenly raised his hand and slapped him twice, hard and fast.
Martin's rage flared. "You damn Lopez brat, I didn't touch anything! You son of a—"
