I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 395

"I waited for him to be discharged and caught him when he was alone. I wanted to give him a real beating, but he's surprisingly good at fighting. Still, it was two against one. He took a lot of punches. Maybe... a broken rib?"

My heart hammered against my chest. "A broken rib?!"

This foolish kid had the same idea as me. He really was my brother. But when I dealt with Verna, I had exercised restraint, and I had a recording as leverage. Even if Verna wanted to cause trouble, she'd have to think twice.

But my brother had just straight-up beaten Steven. That bastard was a skilled fighter; in our past life, even when he fought with Horace, he'd never broken a rib, even at his worst. Anyone with a bit of training knows how to protect themselves. For him to be injured this badly, either Ryan had been incredibly vicious, or Steven had deliberately let it happen.

Neither option was good.

Myron, meanwhile, flinched and backed away from Ryan slightly, adding in a hushed tone.

"I think it's even worse than that. It's pretty serious. Steven's back in the hospital now. But don't worry, Ms. Jones. It'll be fine. If you go visit Steven, take care of him a bit, I'm sure this whole thing will blow over."

Ryan glared at him. "Who's his brother-in-law? Zephyra divorced him, and she's not going to take care of him. In his dreams!"

I frowned. "Did he see your face?"

Ryan nodded with a righteous expression.

I sighed. This was definitely something I had to handle.

Steven hadn't made a move yet, which meant he was either still deciding how to deal with me or simply didn't have the energy to.

"We'll talk about this later, Mr. Taylor. Let's process the resignation first."

Myron insisted on trying to keep my position open for me, but I firmly refused, so he reluctantly processed my departure.

I had already finished all my work, so there wasn't much to hand over. It was mostly just paperwork.

As I was leaving, Myron called out, "If you ever start your own company, Ms. Jones, you have to partner with me! I can't lose you!"

Jacob knew I was leaving and wished me success as well. Then, as if a thought struck him, he stared into my eyes and gave a bitter smile.

"There's something I feel I have to tell you. Verna and I... we're completely over as of last night. She's changed so much since she came back from abroad. Her focus isn't on medical research anymore; it's on making money."

"She wants to be a businesswoman, says she knows a lot of great opportunities. The other day, her roommate saw her getting into a luxury car, and the person picking her up wasn't Mr. Lancaster, but one of Verna's so-called 'connections'. I misunderstood everything... it was all my mistake... In such a short time, she's become someone I don't even recognize."

I was taken aback, looking at his defeated, bitter smile, unsure of what to say.

After all, the things Verna had said to me last night made it clear she had trampled all over Jacob's sincere feelings.

"Perhaps in her eyes, love can't buy her the future she wants. Since you're no longer on the same path, it's better to move on and focus on your career."

Jacob's smile grew even more bitter. "I suppose so. It's true I'm not as good as Steven. I'm not as capable, and certainly not as rich. I'm the failure here."

As he spoke, he couldn't help but glance at me. "But I have a feeling he isn't truly happy either. Zephyra, Steven always treated me with such intense malice, full of resentment and jealousy. Do you think it was because Verna was my girlfriend, or because... he misunderstood and thought there was something inappropriate between you and me?"
