I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 394

After she'd said her piece, I had nothing more to say besides a cold laugh before hanging up.

I glanced down at the call recording I had purposefully saved on my phone, lost in thought.

I believed some of what Verna said. Steven was indeed devoted, fiercely protective, and loyal—not to me, but certainly to her.

But her repeated insistence that I had "stolen her things" left me completely baffled.

This wasn't the first time I'd heard her say it. When someone repeats a phrase like that, it must have a special meaning.

I toyed with my phone, mulling over her words.

In my past life, I had desperately fought for Steven, so head-over-heels in love that I refused to let him go, even though I knew he didn't love me. We were still married when I died.

Therefore, Verna had always been the other woman. Even if Steven spoiled her rotten, she was still the other woman.

It wasn't me who stole from her; she was the one who stole from me.

I chalked it up to Verna's poor choice of words and a twisted sense of reality and put it out of my mind, heading back to my room.

The next day, I had to meet with Myron to discuss my resignation. After the fight I'd had with Steven, there was no reason to stay. Besides, my mentor had only given me a month to sort out my affairs.

As I was about to leave, Ryan appeared with a cheerful grin. "Zephyra, let me give you a ride!"

I noticed a faint bruise at the corner of his lip, one that didn't look like it came from a slap but more like he'd been punched. "What happened to you?" I asked, surprised. "What did you do last night?"

Ryan blinked, touching the corner of his mouth. "Nothing, just bumped into something. Come on, let's go! I'll take you to quit your job, you can see who you need to see, and then we can get Uncle Julian and go home!"

His voice was filled with an eager excitement. I studied him for a moment but decided not to press the issue and went with him to the company.

I had already sent Myron my resignation message last night, so today was just for the official handover. When I arrived, Myron was on the phone, a gloating look on his devilishly handsome face as he reveled in someone else's misfortune.

Myron paused, then a look of wicked delight crossed his face as a thought occurred to him. "No problem at all. I was just thinking about Steven..."

He couldn't help but chuckle. "Steven's assistant just called. Said Steven got beaten up by a love rival from the Lopez family. I didn't realize it was his brother-in-law who did the deed. Well, in that case, it's not a big deal."

Beaten up Steven? What was he talking about?

I looked at Ryan, who snorted proudly, a defiant look on his face. "That's right, I did it. That bastard bullied you yesterday. I couldn't stand it, so I took some guys to the hospital to settle the score. Decided to kick him while he was down!"

My heart lurched. "So the bruise on your lip is from Steven? Did you hurt him badly?"

Just yesterday I was thinking about cutting all ties with Steven, and now my brother had gone and attacked him.

Steven was the type to hold a grudge. If it wasn't serious, we could probably mediate. But if Ryan had hurt him badly, this was going to be trouble.

"Of course! I beat him black and blue. He won't be getting out of bed for at least three days!" Ryan boasted with a grin, which slowly faded under my serious gaze. He quickly adopted a more subdued tone. "Steven seemed to be having a severe headache, and his lackey was watching over him. The hospital security was tight, so I didn't do it in his room."
