In my past life, I was madly in love with Steven, clinging to him relentlessly. Verna was aloof, stubborn, and had a boyfriend, so Steven became obsessed with her, the forbidden fruit he had to have.
In this life, Verna and Jacob inexplicably broke up. Her personality did a complete one-eighty, and she went around claiming I'd stolen her life while actively pursuing Steven. Meanwhile, I gave Steven the cold shoulder and forced a divorce. Our roles had completely reversed, which explained his sudden interest in me this time around. The logic was flawless.
Steven's eyes narrowed, a cold glint in their depths. "I make you sick? Zephyra, stop trying to provoke me. Let the past be the past. Just love me, give me your heart, and I can forgive everything."
He had the nerve to say that, as if he were the one who had been wronged!
I laughed, my face dark with anger, my gaze sharp enough to cut him.
"Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the past isn't over for me. I will not love you. I've taken my heart back, and I'm never giving it to you again. I'm not a robot you can just program to love you?"
"Do you have any idea how much I suffered, Steven? Forgiving you would be a betrayal of my past self. All the pain and misery I went through would be for nothing!"
If I got back together with him, what would that make the me from my past life, the one he abandoned, who cried herself to sleep every night?
He could never understand the torment of dying alone in a cold hospital bed.
I don't know what he was thinking, but his face suddenly paled. He pressed his lips into a thin line, his handsome brows knitted tightly together.
I gave him a cold look. "Are you going to leave or not?"
When he didn't move, I decided to leave myself. But I had only taken two steps when he grabbed my arm and dragged me down the hall. "What are you doing! Steven!"
I was pulled into his room. He opened the door and pushed me inside. I was so furious I started screaming about being kidnapped, but he clamped a hand over my mouth and carried me into the room.
The door locked behind us. Enraged, I grabbed the nearest vase and hurled it at him. Steven sidestepped it, and the vase shattered on the floor.
He bent down and picked up a first-aid kit, his expression as calm as if I hadn't just screamed at and attacked him.
"You don't have to be angry. I just want to treat your wound. You'll stay here tonight. Don't run. I won't touch you."
"I'm just tired of not having you around. I want to see you more. But if you dare to run…" He looked up at me, a rare flicker of madness in his eyes as his lips curved into a smirk. "If you run, I'll take you tomorrow morning."
I thought I had cut all ties with Steven, but it turned out I knew nothing about him, while he knew every move I'd made over the past month. He even knew how much money I'd spent starting my company.
He had seemed completely out of my life, but he'd been watching me all along. I was furious, angry, and a chill ran down my spine. "Steven, are you a stalker?!"
Steven stared at me and said in a low voice, "You didn't come to see me, so naturally, I had to keep a closer eye on you."
Just then, a voice came through on the other end of the line. I looked at Steven's smug face and, for a second, considered going through with the report. But I couldn't.
I couldn't risk my future. Besides, his crimes were minor, and I'd need a lot of evidence. With the competition so close, I didn't have time for this drama. As long as he didn't cross a major line, I would have to endure it.
Reluctantly, I apologized to the dispatcher on the phone, made up an excuse, and hung up.
Steven seemed pleased. A smile touched his lips.
"I forgot to mention, even if you had called the police, they couldn't have arrested me. Bringing you back to my room, kissing you... it's all perfectly legal. After all, Zephyra, we're husband and wife—"
