Hadn't I just told her Verna was different, not just some ordinary assistant? After insulting Verna like that, I had no idea if she'd pissed Steven off.
But to my surprise, Steven wasn't angry at all. Instead, he looked at Verna with cool eyes.
"I am a married man. Watch what you say. And you want to disqualify her? I wouldn't even dare to touch her. Do you have the connections or the status? You're a nobody spreading rumors. Don't you know that's against the law?"
His words fell, and everyone's expression changed.
It wasn't just Linda who was in disbelief; my own brain seemed to shrink as I stared at Steven incredulously.
Did I mishear him? Did Steven just declare his supposed marital status in front of Verna and defend me?
Had he really lost his mind?!
Verna's innocent face was now flushed with humiliation, her beautiful eyes turning red with resentment. "Steven, you're not helping me? Don't you forget—"
She cut herself off as Steven shot her a look so cold it was chilling, his disapproval sharp and clear.
Only after she fell silent did he speak again, his voice icy. "I did not authorize you to come to Sonha. You left your post without permission and have no right to speak on behalf of the company. You will be held solely responsible for any damages caused. This is your verbal warning. Report to the office tomorrow. If you continue to be absent, you will be terminated."
Verna bit her lip so hard her tears stubbornly refused to fall. "Fine. Just fine. Even you're taking her side."
Her gaze landed on me, filled with what looked like pure hatred, her cool face now laced with bitter sarcasm.
"Zephyra, you really are a curse. You won't get away with stealing what's mine!"
With that, she turned and stormed off.
Clearly, I was now the villainess.
Steven was about to speak when I cut him off. "Wait, it doesn't matter. I shouldn't have asked. Whatever is going on between you and Verna is none of my business."
"You don't need to explain to me; I'm not interested in hearing it. Just keep her away from me. It's for her own good. She can't win an argument or a fight against me, so why bother? Tell her to get as far away as possible. Thanks for your cooperation. I wish you two a long and happy life together."
After I finished, I grabbed Linda's arm to leave, but my own arm was suddenly seized by Steven.
He pulled me in front of him, his hand gripping the back of my neck.
"Zephyra, you're just asking for it," Steven stared into my eyes, his handsome face contorted with anger. He gritted his teeth. "Wishing me and Verna a long and happy life? Why don't you wish us a long and happy life? Wish for us to have twins on the first try, a boy and a girl, hmm?"
