I looked into Steven’s eyes and said unhurriedly, “Let’s talk later. I want to know about Leonard first. How is he?”
Steven’s eyes darkened. He turned to Gordon.
Gordon’s heart skipped a beat. He quickly said, “Mr. Lopez is currently in a Lyrion jail. I’ve arranged for a lawyer to apply for bail. I’ll let you know as soon as there’s any news.”
Bail meant Leonard could probably get out of this.
I couldn’t help but glance at Steven, then back at Gordon.
“I thought Leonard was in the country, and that you knew first because of your connections. Since he’s overseas, how did you find out before our family did?”
An almost imperceptible tension crossed Gordon’s face.
Steven looked at me, his own expression unreadable. “You don’t think I can be more capable than you?”
I let out a small laugh, hiding the suspicion in my eyes, and looped my arm through his.
“Of course. You’re the most capable man I’ve ever met. Steven, you’ll make sure Leonard is safe, right?”
As the words hung in the air, I caught Gordon's stunned expression clearly out of the corner of my eye.
Steven’s body tensed. He looked down, his eyes fixed on me. “He’s your brother. If you want him to be safe, he will be.”
“I thank you on his behalf,” I said, giving Steven a sweet smile, a complete one-eighty from my earlier hostility. “I was wondering, could you get me the contact information for the victim? I’d like to meet her. I want to see what kind of woman could make Leonard stumble time and time again.”
Steven’s eyes stared at me. “You want to meet her?”
I nodded. He said in a low voice, “I’ll arrange it.”
Seeing his chance, Gordon spoke up tactfully, “Mr. Lancaster, I’ll go contact Ms. Welch, then.”
With that, he practically fled, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
I tightened my grip on Steven’s arm. “How’s your wound? Have you treated it?”
“Since you’re so touched, are you still going to the courthouse with me tomorrow to get a divorce?”
I applied medicine to his arm. “I’ve given it some serious thought. You made a pretty bold confession, and I’ve genuinely felt your sincerity. To avoid any regrets, I’ve decided to give you a chance. You can spend this time pursuing me properly. If I have a change of heart, we can try to make things work from now on. How does that sound?”
Steven’s eyes narrowed into a half-smile. “Such pretty words. And what about your groom-to-be? Are you just going to cast him aside?”
Horace.
Right. If I started my revenge on Steven, Horace would likely get hurt.
My heart clenched painfully, and my hands froze. Steven’s intense gaze fell upon me, and I quickly, naturally, applied a bandage to his arm.
“I’ve wronged him. A wicked woman like me, playing with his feelings over and over… I don’t deserve him. He deserves a better girl.”
Steven’s eyes were shadowed, a faint, knowing smile playing on his lips. He didn’t say anything more.
After I finished dressing his wound and was about to get up to put things away, Steven suddenly wrapped an arm around my waist. Before I could react, I was pulled into his lap, trapped in his embrace in an intimate position.
