Soon, a grim-faced Steven hurried in. He first checked on me, reaching out to touch my face, his voice cold.
“Are you hurt anywhere else?”
I turned my head away from his touch. “I’m fine. Perfectly fine.”
This was trouble. Steven usually stayed out of the fights between his mother and me. He was indifferent to his parents, but due to tradition, he was still a somewhat dutiful son. When his mother had demanded I serve her or drink fertility tonics, he had generally turned a blind eye.
But this time, his mother was badly injured. She was definitely going to start a fight with me.
I couldn’t afford to have a falling out with Steven right now; I needed to get my hands on his bid information. If we argued, I’d have to be the one to appease him.
So annoying.
Steven’s brow furrowed, his gaze deepening as he withdrew his hand.
Seeing Steven, Mrs. Lancaster immediately started wailing. “Steven! Steven, you should have come to see me first! Zephyra is tough as nails, she’s barely hurt. It’s me! I’m the one who’s seriously injured! This is all Zephyra’s fault! She’s the one who grabbed me and made me fall down the stairs!”
Megan interjected coldly, “Mr. Lancaster, it was Mrs. Lancaster who pushed Zephyra. Zephyra just instinctively pulled her down with her.”
“I didn’t push her! I just bumped into her by accident! Who knew she would just fall like that!” Mrs. Lancaster yelled at her. “This has nothing to do with you! Get out!”
Antonia stood by like a statue, not daring to breathe.
Steven ignored his mother and instead glanced at Megan. “Thank you for bringing them here. Have your father contact me when he has time. You may leave.”
Megan knew it wasn't wise to meddle in family affairs. Her relationship with me wasn't that deep; she had only spoken up out of gratitude for my past help. Since Steven was clearly offering to repay the favor, she didn’t say any more.
I stood up and looked at Megan. “I’ll walk you out.”
I never knew Steven had said something like that to his mother.
Mrs. Lancaster bit her lip. “I—I know. But you hit Thomas for her! How could I just ignore that? I know you’re a good son. Zephyra must have put you up to it. I don’t blame you; I just wanted to talk to her and clear things up.”
Steven was radiating cold fury. “No one can order me to do anything. What I do, I do of my own free will. Not only did you meet with Zephyra, you spoke to her and you laid a hand on her. How should we settle this account?”
Mrs. Lancaster’s eyes widened in disbelief and pain.
“Steven! What are you saying? Look at the two of us! Who’s more injured? Zephyra used me as a human cushion! She just has a tiny scratch on her head, and you’re this worried about her? I’m lying here, unable to move, and you want to settle a score with me for her sake? Are you even my son?!”
“Then let’s not be mother and son anymore,” Steven said, his face calm and detached under his dark hair, his voice low. “From this day forward, our families will go their separate ways.”
“If you wish to live out your old age in peace, then avoid Zephyra when you see her. If you interfere in our affairs again, I will make sure both you and Thomas are cast out of the Lancaster family.”
