Steven slowly opened his eyes. His dark, deep-set gaze locked onto me immediately. His voice was gentle, devoid of the out-of-control fury from the video.
“Where were you going so late?”
The more peaceful he seemed, the colder my palms grew. I knew Steven. If he flew into a rage and yelled at me, it meant there was room for negotiation. But when he was this terrifyingly calm, it meant he was ready to settle the score.
I looked at him. “I was in a good mood, so I went for a drive.”
Steven's thin lips curved into a slight smile as he rose to his feet.
He strode toward me with long legs, each step like the swing of a scythe. I had to force myself to stand my ground and not retreat.
“A good mood? In what way?” He stood before me, his long fingers tipping my chin up, forcing me to meet his eyes. His handsome features were smiling, but his gaze was seething with menace.
“Were you happy because you thought setting Antonia on me would work? Or because you thought you could actually get away and be free of me for good, hmm?”
I remained calm. “I just went for a drive, I never said I was running away. If you don't believe me, ask Calvin. When he told me to come back, I did so without a word. As for Antonia... if she wants to seduce you, that's her business. If you have a problem, take it up with her. Don't blame me for it. I don't know anything.”
Steven let out a noncommittal “Oh?” and laughed. “But I heard you bought a ticket to Lyrion.”
I froze. He knew about that too?
At that moment, Steven took my hand and led me further into the room, sitting me down on the sofa.
He poured me a glass of warm water, speaking unhurriedly. “Is it cold outside? Why are your hands so chilled?”
“Antonia said you saw her drug the food and even specifically asked her which bowl you could eat. Then, once the drug took effect, you pushed her onto me and ran. Zephyra, did you want to watch me sleep with another woman?”
I gritted my teeth. In the heat of the moment, I hadn't considered how Steven found the cameras. Antonia didn't know about them, yet he did. He even knew there were two.
“Were you spying on me?”
“I never spy on you. Nora found them while cleaning.” His gaze was scornful as he stood over me.
“You know I would never touch you. I’d give you anything you want. As long as you don’t go too far, I can turn a blind eye to your little tricks and schemes. I was waiting for you to have a change of heart, but instead you scheme to send another woman to my bed and watch the sex tape. Ha.”
“I always knew you were lying to me. It’s not in your nature to reconcile with me so easily. But I still gave you resources and helped you get your business license just to make you happy. Did that money and those resources just become your escape fund? Zephyra, am I never going to be able to win you over? Is it really so hard for you to just be with me?”
