When I woke up, it was already evening.
The longer I slept, the foggier my head became. I didn't feel well.
Julian, worried I was getting sick, placed a hand on my forehead. “Maybe we should get you checked out at the hospital?”
I shook my head and smiled. “No, it’s fine. I probably just slept too long. I don’t even know how I fell asleep. Is Horace gone?”
“Yeah, he left right after carrying you back to your room.”
I just said, “Oh.”
That was fine. I’d laid all my cards on the table today. It could serve as our farewell.
Julian handed me a gift box, his usually stoic face filled with an immense tenderness.
“I won’t stop you from going abroad, Zephyra. The world is a vast place, and a young woman’s future holds infinite possibilities. When you’re out there building your career, you have to take good care of yourself. And you have to call your Uncle Julian often, you hear?”
My heart softened, and I couldn't help but hug him. “I will, I promise! Thank you, Uncle Julian!”
He wasn't my father, but he was more of a father to me than anyone.
It was making me reluctant to leave.
Julian sighed, gently patting my back.
What Uncle Julian gave me was the deed to a house in Lyrion. The keys were inside, along with a bank card. He thought I was going to Lyrion, and while he wouldn't stop me, he had prepared everything I would need.
My heart suddenly felt both sore and soft, and my eyes slowly turned red.
If Steven gave me a house, it would be a gift for as long as we were on good terms. If we fell out, he might take it back one day. But a house from my Uncle Julian was truly mine, forever.
So when it came to choosing between family and a man, it was hard not to choose family.
The next morning, I said goodbye to my family and took my suitcase back to Ixia.
Rachel did the math. “It’s just after two now. By the time we finish this meal, we should be able to hear the court’s decision.”
She chatted happily with me, and only after we finished lunch did she ask quietly, “Did you tell Horace you were leaving?”
I nodded. “Not only did I tell him, I made it clear to him. The three of us will always be friends from now on. He didn't object. He said he would try his best to let go.”
Rachel’s pupils contracted almost imperceptibly. “Is that what he said?”
I hummed in agreement, looking at her quizzically. “Is there a problem?”
Rachel forced a smile. “No, it’s just that Horace seems to be letting go a little too easily. It’s not like him.”
“Maybe he just doesn’t want to make things difficult for me.”
I toyed with the straw in my hand. Soon, a call came from Noah. His voice was clear and nonchalant. “Victory. Congratulations on being officially single again.”
