My eyes lit up, but I was also confused. “It’s only a little after three. Is the case already over?”
“It is. Steven’s lawyer conceded on everything, so it was an easy win. I even got you some compensation for emotional distress,” Noah said with a sigh. “If I’d known Steven was just going to show up for a look and not participate, I wouldn’t have taken your case. I prepared for a huge battle, but in the end, the main guy didn’t even care. How boring.”
Steven went to the hearing?
He couldn't have just gone for a look. He must have left when he saw I wasn't there.
But why was he still looking for me at this point? Steven was an incredibly proud man. After a betrayal like mine, there was no way he'd be looking for me.
If he wanted to settle the score, he should have sent someone to do it.
A sudden, inexplicable unease washed over me. After hanging up, I said to Rachel, “Since we have nothing to do, should we just head to the airport and wait?”
Rachel had no objections.
She had driven.
I pressed the elevator button in the mall, heading for the parking garage.
As I waited for the elevator with my suitcase, I suddenly felt a weight on my arm. Rachel leaned in close and whispered.
“Zephyra, I think I see your ex-husband. Straight ahead, to your left. Is that him?”
“No way. How would he find me here?” I said, but my body tensed as I turned to look.
In the distance, a tall, handsome man was asking the hostess at the restaurant where I had just eaten something. The next second, he lifted his head, his dark eyes locking onto me.
His handsome face was expressionless. His sharp gaze slid from my face down to my suitcase, and his eyes clearly grew colder. His focus returned to my face, the intense stare of a hunter tracking its prey. Then, he started walking toward me.
Several bodyguards followed behind him.
Seeing this, Rachel grew even more frantic. She tried to follow, but the bodyguards blocked her, forcing her to watch as I was taken away.
“Steven! You can’t hurt Zephyra! You have nothing to do with each other anymore! If you dare lay a hand on her, that’s assault, and we will sue you, do you hear me?!”
Her voice faded as we got further away. Panicked, Rachel stomped hard on the foot of the bodyguard blocking her. As he flinched in pain, she scrambled up the stairs. “Zephyra!”
She stopped halfway up. My situation wasn’t as dire as she’d feared. She saw me pull out my phone and had just managed to call out Horace’s name when Steven smashed it to the ground.
“Steven!” I stared at my shattered phone on the floor, and without a second thought, I slapped him across the face.
Rachel gasped, looking at me in disbelief. She couldn't believe I dared to hit Steven. What shocked her even more was that after taking the slap, Steven didn’t hit back.
His handsome face was frozen solid, his deep eyes locked on mine. Suddenly, he grabbed my furious face, lowered his head, and kissed me—
