My face was cold as I got out of the car. Only then did I realize that this was Hoa Bridge—the very bridge where Horace had his accident.
To be honest, the place was traumatic for me; it held dark memories. But I suppressed my emotions and walked over to Rachel’s side.
Rachel’s expression was a little strange.
Verna raised her hand to slap me, but I caught her wrist mid-air. “I’m in a hurry and in a very bad mood. Don’t provoke me. Say what you have to say and get out of my way.”
She angrily shook my hand off and glanced at Rachel and the bodyguards. “What I have to say is for your ears only. Tell them to back off.”
It was clear this was going to take a while. Annoyed by the delay, I turned to leave, but Verna’s voice rang out.
“Zephyra, don’t you want to know the whole story? Don’t you want to know why Mr. Lancaster is so obsessed with you, why things have turned out this way? Besides him, I’m the only one in the world who knows the past. If you keep acting on your own, you’ll only end up hurting more people!”
I stopped dead in my tracks. I suddenly remembered Verna’s earlier warning that my actions against Steven would harm many people.
I hadn’t believed her then, but with Grandpa Marico’s sudden accident, a deep unease settled in my heart. My hands, hanging at my sides, slowly clenched into fists. After a few seconds of silence, I said, “Rachel, wait for me over there.”
“Okay.” Rachel’s gaze was complicated as she turned and moved away.
I walked toward Verna. “Alright, talk. Tell me everything you know.”
It was 4:30 in the afternoon.
In the Aether Studio conference room, numerous high-level executives were seated. Thomas chewed gum, spinning idly in his office chair, sunglasses perched on his nose, the picture of nonchalance.
Several others voiced their strong agreement, while some cast skeptical glances at Thomas. “Mr. Thomas Lancaster is a man of leisure. He’s good at chasing women, but making money? I doubt he has the ability.”
Thomas shot them a cold glare, annoyance flaring within him.
Mr. Lee spoke up. “The second young master is young, but his potential is limitless. After Mr. Lancaster lost billions, the second young master brought in new investment. That’s more than any of you can say, isn’t it?”
The others, content to wait for their dividends, had never bothered to seek out investors. They had nothing to say.
Mr. Lee continued, “Mr. Lancaster’s vision and abilities are indeed impressive. We’ve all seen it and we admire him for it. What he’s achieved at his age is unparalleled. But his judgment is clouded!”
“Even if he stopped expanding and just focused on defending our current position, our market value wouldn’t have evaporated so quickly. But he’s completely love-struck! And his wife isn’t even on his side. Billions, gone just like that. Our projects were stolen, and he did nothing. He doesn’t even seem to realize his mistake. How is he any different from a spendthrift heir?”
