I had a long, sorrowful dream.
I dreamt of my many lives with Steven.
Unlike the three lives Verna mentioned, my entanglement with Steven had spanned a full five lifetimes.
The people I encountered in each life were more or less the same. And though each life began differently, they all ended up on the same tragic path.
In every life, I died a horrible death.
But only in the last life was I so weary in body and soul, so utterly disheartened. I hated Steven to the bone, and we became a couple bound by resentment.
In the end, I died a lonely, miserable death from terminal stomach cancer, all alone in a hospital bed.
Before I died, I had to watch him get engaged to Verna. The sight was enough to make me draw my last breath.
I knew I was dreaming but couldn't wake up. My body ached all over, and my mind had to endure the torment of the nightmare, reliving the pain of my past deaths and emotional abuse again and again.
It was repetitive torture, utterly agonizing.
What I didn't know was that the people outside my dream were going just as mad.
The thugs who had grabbed me had all been dealt with harshly. They were beaten far worse than I was, but instead of a hospital, they were sent straight to jail.
If Mr. Lancaster Sr. hadn't stopped him, Steven would have snapped Verna's neck.
Veins bulged on the forehead of his handsome face, his dark eyes roiling with a fierce hostility.
“If anything happens to Zephyra, Verna, none of us are getting out of this alive.”
Verna was both shocked and panicked, her incoherent sobbing laced with intense anger.
“Rachel was the one who called her out! You went after Horace, and Rachel was heartbroken! She slapped Zephyra the moment she saw her! I was just standing there, what did I do wrong!”
“And it was your father who sent men to grab Zephyra! She only fell down the stairs because she was scared and panicking! It has nothing to do with me!”
“Yes, I admit I had my own agenda. You insisted on being entangled with that villainess, stubbornly going your own way. As the one you're supposed to be with, do you think I could just stand by and do nothing? Of course I had to persuade her to leave you!”
“But I swear, I only used my words, and I really didn't know she was pregnant! Go settle your scores with Rachel and your father! Don't drag us into it. If you want to burn the world down, remember that your grandfather will burn with it!”
The murderous intent in Steven's eyes didn't fade. “So it was Rachel, and my father?”
“Yes! Do you really think I have the power to arrange something like that?” Verna bit her lip hard, fear in her eyes, terrified that he would lose control.
“You paid me to stay away from you. That money was also for me to protect myself and not get Zephyra involved. I've done that. I haven't dragged her into anything. Except for when your parents demanded it, I've barely been near you. Don't just fly into a rage and blame me every time something happens to her.”
