“I didn’t hurt Zephyra! How could Mr. Lancaster Sr. attack me without any reason? He can’t just bully someone younger like this…” Verna’s face went pale. She turned to run, but a hand clamped over her mouth and she was forced into a van.
No one saw it happen.
And naturally, no one could save her.
That evening, the doctor finally emerged from the emergency room.
Mr. Lancaster Sr. and Rachel shot to their feet. The doctor approached Steven and said, “Mr. Lancaster, your wife and child are incredibly lucky. I’ve never seen a case of such severe hemorrhaging where we were able to save the baby.”
“The fetal heartbeat is strong, the embryo is developing well, and there’s no cervical shortening. Despite the blood loss, both mother and child are stable. She’ll need plenty of bed rest. She did suffer a head injury from the fall, which doesn’t seem serious right now, but we’ll need to wait until she wakes up to know for sure.”
Rachel burst into tears of relief. Mr. Lancaster Sr. let out a long breath, clasping his hands together. “Thank God. Thank God Zephyra pulled through.”
He looked at Steven. “You can relax now, kid. Go get something to eat before you collapse on me!”
Steven hadn't had a single drop of water all day. His throat was so dry he could barely speak.
Dressed in his trench coat, his impossibly handsome face remained impassive, but the turmoil in his eyes betrayed his relief. “Can I see her now?” he asked, his voice raw.
The doctor replied, “She’ll need to be monitored in the ICU tonight. If there are no complications, we can move her to a regular room tomorrow.”
The doctor said I should wake up tomorrow, but who could have known I would remain unconscious for days, unable to wake up no matter what.
Nightmares played out in my mind like a television series, one after another.
In the first life, the one I dreamed of during my amnesia, Mr. Lancaster Sr. had arranged our marriage. We were deeply in love. Then Horace, my childhood friend, returned from a business trip, and Steven got jealous, even quarreling with me over it. He was too cold; if a relationship didn't revolve around him, he could end it at any moment.
