With that, he shot me a look filled with scorn and disdain before turning and storming out.
Steven bent down to pick up the bowl that hadn't broken. "I've already taken care of Leonard's situation. He'll be able to return home in a couple of days. I won't stop you if you want to go home, but I'm keeping you here now because your body isn't ready."
"I'll bring Verna to you by tomorrow at the latest. That will complete the three things I promised. Now, can you tell me what happened?"
His tone was gentle, without a trace of indifference or anger.
My mood began to settle, but I didn't answer him.
Trusting Steven was a thing of the distant past.
"You just need to bring her here. I'll handle my own affairs. I don't need you to do anything extra."
"As for the billion dollars, it's up to you whether you take it back or not. I just said it on a whim because you wouldn't let me go home, took my phone, and hung up on me."
"But I'd advise you to get that billion back. Otherwise, it's just money down the drain."
Verna. I would not let her go!
I would pay her back tenfold for how she had tormented me.
I was the villainess anyway, destined for a tragic end. What was the point in being a good person?
Steven stared at me, his brows knitting together more tightly. But he didn't say anything more on the matter, only, "There's more in the pot. I'll get you another serving. I won't feed you; you can eat it yourself."
I didn't refuse. In truth, I didn't have the power to refuse.
Steven's face instantly turned to ice, his eyes fierce, his voice even colder.
"Someone pushed her down the stairs, and you didn't say anything?"
The thug looked troubled. "I wasn't sure at the time because I was far away. But since your wife said she was pushed, then I'm sure of it. Besides, when it happened, you... you weren't paying attention to us. You only had eyes for your wife. You had your men teach us a lesson, and we did time for it. As far as we were concerned, the matter was closed."
Steven's gaze grew sharper as he pieced it together. "It was Verna, wasn't it?"
The thug replied, "I don't know her name, but she's your fiancée, the one Mr. Lancaster Sr. approved of. She's really beautiful, the woman you're on good terms with!"
His dark eyes narrowed dangerously. "Is that how you described it to my wife?"
The thug blinked, answering honestly, "Yeah. After your wife fell, you never once went after that woman. So you must have a good relationship, right? Was I wrong?"
