Steven's impossibly handsome face turned utterly grim, his expression severe as a terrifying fury churned in his eyes.
The thug's stomach was in knots, thinking he had said the wrong thing and was about to get another beating from Steven.
But instead, Steven just looked at him.
"Do one thing for me, and then you can go."
The thug breathed a sigh of relief. "Just give the order, sir," he said with a grin.
"The woman you think I'm on good terms with—bring her to me tonight. By any means necessary."
The thug looked astonished. "Are... are you serious? Don't go telling me I was too rough and hurt her, and then throw me in jail again. I'm scared, Mr. Lancaster."
"Do I look like I'm joking?" Steven said, his face a mask of indifference. "I'll tell you where she is. If you don't have her here by morning at the latest, you can spend the rest of your life behind bars."
The thug's expression tensed immediately. "Don't worry, Mr. Lancaster, I'll get the job done right!"
With that, he was led away.
Steven stared out at the dark, starless sky, a violent flame of rage seeming to ignite in his chest, spreading quickly and uncontrollably.
"In this final lifetime, you still won't grant me peace?"
A cool breeze swept by, fanning the flames of his anger even higher. He took out his phone and made a call.
"Gordon, what's the status?"
Gordon replied instantly, "Mr. Lancaster, we've located her, but... Ms. Garcia is at your brother's house."
"A few days ago, on the day your wife had her accident, it seems your father sent people to punish her. Your brother rescued her and brought her back to his villa to recover. It might not be easy to get her."
"Spread the word. Anyone who tries to stop me is making an enemy of me," Steven said, his narrow eyes glinting, his voice as cold as ice. "I'm sending a man over to you. Tie her up if you have to, but get her here!"
"I want to see her tonight. I'm not waiting until tomorrow."
The palpable coldness and killing intent in his voice made even Gordon tremble on the other end of the line. "Yes, Mr. Lancaster."
Inside the hospital room, I forced myself out of bed. The pain in my lower abdomen had lessened considerably. My baby was sometimes fragile, but at other times, stronger than even me.
I went to the bathroom, completely unaware of what had just transpired outside my door.
A large, clean mirror hung on the wall. The person in it was so thin she looked like a gust of wind could blow her away. Her palm-sized, exquisitely beautiful face was drained of all color, her lips pale, looking utterly exhausted.
I stared at my reflection, a bitter smile touching my lips.
Somehow, I had managed to mess up my life this badly again.
Verna. She had cut off my path to life twice.
My hand gently rested on my stomach as I whispered, "Baby, if your father sides against me again, what... what should I do?"
His words were laced with a fierce protectiveness and a barely perceptible hint of rage.
I looked at him, at his earnest expression, unable to tell if he was being sincere.
So I didn't reply, only saying, "It's late. I want to sleep."
"Okay." Steven's throat bobbed. He closed his eyes, suppressing the storm of emotions inside him, hiding the frustration in his gaze.
He turned off the main light. I thought he was leaving, but he lay down beside me, his long arm wrapping around my waist.
"Steven!"
"Don't be angry with me." He sounded aggrieved, so much so that his voice was raspy, yet filled with a stronger sense of desperation. "I know what you're thinking. Because of Verna, you're going to leave me again, aren't you?"
I gritted my teeth. Wasn't he supposed to be the aloof, untouchable one? Since when did he become so shameless?
"Get off!"
Steven didn't move. He buried his head in the crook of my neck, his hot breath fanning across my skin.
"I was wrong, Zephyra. When you got hurt, my mind was a mess. I could only focus on you, not anyone else, and that gave Verna an opening."
"It won't happen again, I swear. Can you forgive me this one time?"
"All I want is one lifetime with a perfect ending with you. Just this once. Just this lifetime. Please?"
