I was completely trapped in Steven's embrace, unable to break free, so I finally gave up struggling.
"I remember you used to be so proud, not shameless like you are now."
Steven's powerful arms held my waist tightly. "You used to love me very much, not cold like you are now."
"..."
"Zephyra," Steven murmured, kissing my hair, "I will get justice for you. Don't take your anger out on me, okay?"
His voice was still low and detached, but his tone carried a hint of grievance, as if I were the one who had wronged him.
The woman he doted on had nearly killed me multiple times. The fact that I was waiting to gather evidence before taking my revenge instead of dealing with her on the spot was already giving him plenty of face.
I was getting irritated. "Isn't she always going on about being the heroine and me being the villainess? A villainess and a hero together would, in your words, throw the world into chaos, leading to its destruction."
"Besides, don't you need to keep protecting her? Are you really willing to oppose her for my sake?"
In the dim light, Steven's eyes snapped open, their expression unreadable.
He didn't mention Verna again, but instead asked a different question.
"Do you believe you're the villainess?"
A cold smile touched my lips. "What is there to believe or not believe? Is it up to me? If my destiny is to be the villainess, then why should I have to be a good person?"
He was silent for a moment before saying softly, "Be whoever you want to be. I will protect you."
I wanted to see the look on his face, to see if he meant it. After all, according to Verna, both she and Steven knew the course of destiny, understood their respective paths.
If I truly became the villainess, I would be on the opposite side from him. Would he really abandon the heroine to help the villainess teach her a lesson?
Was that possible? Wouldn't that contradict everything he had done for the past twenty-plus years?
Gordon was standing at the entrance, his expression grave.
"Mr. Lancaster, we've brought Ms. Garcia. She's in the room next door."
Steven said nothing, walking towards the next room. The moment the door opened, he heard Thomas's voice shouting in Verna's defense.
"I said let her go! She's my woman! Even if it was Steven who wanted to see her, you should have invited her politely, not tied her to a chair! Her injuries haven't even healed yet!"
"Let her go, do you hear me!"
Just then, the thug and his men looked towards the door and said respectfully, "Mr. Lancaster."
Thomas instantly fell silent. He watched the impossibly handsome yet expressionless man walk in, and a sudden wave of pressure hit him. He swallowed nervously.
"Brother... what... what are you doing? It's after one in the morning. What's so urgent that you had to kidnap someone from my house?"
