I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 846

As she glared at me, I tossed my own carton of milk out too.

Rachel’s anger turned to confusion. “What are you doing? That was the water they finally gave us.”

I told her the truth. “I think they put something in the milk.”

Rachel’s eyes widened. “Something? What kind of something?”

Seeing her innocent expression, I felt a little helpless.

She always assumed the best in people, which was why she was so easily brainwashed by someone like Verna. “I don’t know. Sleeping pills, maybe.”

Fearing she wouldn’t understand, I added, “Think about it. They’re kidnappers. Do you really think they care about our nutrition? Would they go out of their way to buy us milk? Is that likely?”

Rachel stared at me, a look of dawning realization on her face.

“Then what do we do?” she asked anxiously.

I scanned the room. It had clearly been specially prepared for us—completely empty, with even the bathroom door removed. There was nowhere to hide.

I sighed. “I don’t know. We’ll have to play it by ear.”

I pulled Rachel over to the doorway and hung my coat back where we had been sitting. In the dim evening light, they would hopefully mistake it for us.

Before long, we heard footsteps outside the door.

“You think they’re asleep yet?” one voice asked.

“Relax. I put in a heavy dose. I guarantee they’re sleeping like pigs,” another voice replied.

“Not ‘they.’ Just that feisty one. I checked around, she’s got no connections. You can have your fun with her and no one will do a thing.”

They argued outside about who would go first. Rachel clapped a hand over her mouth, shrinking back against me.

My words hit their mark. A flicker of panic crossed the man’s eyes before quickly morphing into rage.

“I’m warning you, this has nothing to do with you. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay out of it.”

With that, he shot a look at the other man, who strode over, grabbed Rachel by the hair, and hauled her to her feet.

The stocky man ordered, “Take her to the other room.”

At his command, the man started to drag Rachel away.

Rachel screamed in terror. “What are you doing? Let me go! Help! Zephyra! Zephyra, help me!”

The stocky man threatened her viciously, “Shut up! If you scream again, I’ll cut your tongue out!”

The taller man was half-pulling, half-dragging Rachel toward the door. I lunged forward and grabbed the arm she held out to me.
