Hearing this, I paused, studying her with suspicion.
“I’ve already agreed to go abroad. You don’t need to say these things to trick me anymore.”
Rachel shook her head frantically. “Zephyra, I mean every word this time. You were so brave saving me just now. Based on that alone, I can't believe you're the monster she painted you as.”
I was speechless.
Rachel continued, “I was just deceiving myself before. I wanted to find some hope for Horace’s legs, so I brainwashed myself into thinking that if you left the country, his legs would miraculously heal.”
“Now I realize how incredibly wrong I was. Don’t worry, I won’t lie to you again. If you don’t believe me, I’ll stay far away from you. I’ll never see you again.”
Rachel cried as she spoke, her voice growing hoarse.
I looked at her. “Are you telling the truth?”
Rachel nodded hard, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I shifted to face her. “Then I have a question for you, and I need you to answer me honestly.”
Rachel sniffled. “Ask me anything. I’ll tell you everything I know.”
I met her gaze. “Where was Verna originally planning for you to take me today?”
I knew Verna’s plan couldn't have been this simple. She wasn’t a genius, but she wasn’t a complete idiot either. Hadn’t she considered what would happen if I sensed something was wrong halfway there and tried to escape from the car?
Rachel answered without hesitation. “To a remote cabin in the mountains. She said that except for weekends, it’s usually empty, so no one would know you were there.”
I pressed on, “And then what? Did she mention how she planned to get me out of the country?”
Normally, if kidnappers took me without hurting me, it meant they had a goal. If they were already negotiating with Steven or my Uncle Julian, they would surely demand to hear my voice as proof of life. Why had there been no contact so far?
Rachel leaned against the wall. “If you can’t figure it out, don’t stress over it. Your housekeeper has already gone back, right? Uncle Julian must be frantically looking for us by now. He might even show up at the door to rescue us any second.”
That was true. Maybe Uncle Julian already had a lead and was on his way.
Rachel yawned beside me. I turned to look at her. “If you’re tired, get some sleep.”
She shook her head vigorously. “No way. I can’t sleep. Who knows if those two bastards will come back? I’m waiting until morning.”
I offered her half of my coat. “Relax and sleep. They won’t be back tonight. Get some rest and build up your strength. Who knows if we’ll even get food tomorrow.”
Rachel yawned again and said, “Would they… dare to not feed us?”
