I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 849

Rachel was indignant. “You’re just letting them go? What they did was a crime.”

She seemed to have forgotten that kidnapping was also a crime, and was now looking to our captor to dispense justice.

Nelson sheathed his knife and looked at me, his face impassive. “You two should behave as well. Otherwise, if something really does happen, you’ll just have to accept your fate.”

Rachel opened her mouth to say more, but I stopped her.

I was now certain he was their leader. “Excuse me, can we talk?”

He looked down at me, a scornful smile playing on his lips. “Us? Talk? About what…”

He probably found the idea of a kidnapper and a hostage having a chat ridiculous.

I looked at him with a serious expression. “If I’m not mistaken, you’re working for someone else. How much are they paying you? I can double it. If you let us go, the money will be wired to your account immediately.”

The man leaned against the wall and chuckled.

“You make it sound too simple. If we had no integrity, who would ever hire us again?”

Rachel gathered her courage. “Don’t be so rigid. You’re just doing a job. Why are you so loyal to your boss? Surely more money in hand is better.”

Rachel had a point, but it didn't really apply to men in their line of work. To them, a code of honor was often more important than money.

But I had to try.

“I’m sure your ultimate goal in all of this is to make money. And since you kidnapped me, you must know who I am and my relationship with Steven. When it comes to money, all you have to do is name your price, and he can pay it.”

Silence fell in the room. Rachel didn't speak again, just stood quietly beside me.

I didn’t know what she was doing and didn’t plan to ask. Then I heard the sound of dripping water, a soft tapping next to my feet. I looked up and saw Rachel, her head bowed, crying. Fat tears rolled down her cheeks.

I frowned slightly. “It’s over now. What are you crying for?”

Rachel sobbed uncontrollably. “Zephyra, I’m so sorry. I lied to you and cursed you over and over, but you still helped me. If it weren’t for you back there, I probably would have…”

Seeing her crying so pitifully, I felt a pang of sympathy. “Stop crying. The important thing is that you’re safe.”

Rachel sat down next to me. “I’m sorry, Zephyra… I was so foolish before, believing Verna’s words and helping her deceive you. I almost caused you to have a miscarriage.”

“I was so selfish. I knew you weren’t responsible for what happened to Horace, but I deliberately tried to blame you…”
