After seeing off both fathers, Gavin returned home just as dusk settled over the house.
Winter was creeping in. The days grew shorter, the nights longer, making time feel like it was slipping through their fingers.
That night, Gavin pulled Sophie into his arms and murmured, "Do you remember what today is? Five years ago today?"
Sophie racked her brain but came up empty. Deciding to play the pregnancy card, she scoffed, "Pregnancy brain is real. Don't throw numbers at me."
"Five years ago today, I chased you all the way to Denver," Gavin said, his voice deadly serious.
"Are we taking a trip down memory lane to remind ourselves how good we have it now?" Sophie teased.
"I was just thinking about what my mom told us before the wedding. 'Never forget the absolute certainty you felt when you decided to be together.' I've never forgotten. From San Francisco to Denver, and all the way to Seattle, I chased you across the country. I'm just incredibly grateful I never gave up."
"Your mom meant after the wedding. You put in the work before we got married, but you need to keep up the momentum now that we are."
Sophie balled her hand into a fist and gave him an exaggerated, encouraging cheer.
"I noticed Dad looked a bit heartbroken at the dinner table today. Once you cross a line, making amends is almost impossible."
Sophie knew exactly which 'Dad' Gavin was talking about.
She didn't say anything, just buried her face deeper into Gavin's chest.
It was the kind of colossal mistake they would constantly remind themselves never to make.
"Oh, and Dad was right. Watch how much you drink from now on. You're way too much of a Casanova when you're wasted. Who knows what kind of trouble you'll get into."
Sophie suddenly remembered that keeping each other in check meant exactly that—keeping each other in check.
Gavin slapped a hand over her mouth.
Coco's bassinet was right next to their bed. He couldn't let his precious baby girl hear such slanderous accusations against him.
"She's a month old. She doesn't understand a word you're saying."
