I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 4

Nora felt as if something had slammed violently into her chest. "Cassie, how could you speak to your mother like that?"

Cassie was startled for a moment, then burst into tears. "I'm not wrong! You don't have a job, you just spend the money Daddy left behind!"-

Nora's hands trembled slightly. She closed her eyes tightly, trying to comfort herself.

She was only five years old.

What did a five-year-old know? She had just been led astray, fed toxic ideas by Finnegan and Seraphina.

Once she was back by her side, Nora would guide her properly. Cassie was smart; she would eventually understand.

She was the daughter she had risked her life to bring into this world. They were bound by blood. Even though she said such hurtful things, how could Nora possibly abandon her?

Right then, a deep, magnetic voice struck Nora through the receiver. "Nora, crying too much is bad for Cassie's health. You should just come over. She doesn't have a father, can you really bear to see her so upset?"

In an instant, Nora's breath stopped.

Who could have imagined that the man she had called Frederick for the past five years was actually her daughter's father, her supposedly dead husband.

Finnegan Fletcher. He had played her so cruelly.

Nora lifted her head, her gaze turning sharp. Wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes, she said, "Frederick, since you're there too, why don't you go buy them? I can't make it right now."

The next second, Cassie snatched the phone back, sobbing. "But you're the best at this kind of stuff! Just, just like the maids! Isn't this what you're supposed to do? Why are you suddenly refusing when it's for Aunt Seraphina?"

Cassie paused, then added, "Mom, stop targeting Aunt Seraphina. It makes you look so immature. Even I'm more mature than you."

With that, the line went dead.

Sitting in the taxi, Nora squeezed her eyes shut. Her eyes burned, and her ears rang. These were the words spoken by the daughter she had cherished and protected for five years.
