I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 5

Nora turned her head and saw Finnegan in a perfectly tailored suit. The sheer impact of his sharp, sculpted face made her heart skip a beat involuntarily.

Her body's instinct reacted faster than the hatred in her heart, and tears instantly streamed down her cheeks.

Finnegan had already walked over, with Cassie trailing behind, holding his hand.

Seeing the tear tracks on Nora's face, a barely noticeable frown flickered across his forehead. He instinctively reached out to wipe them away, but caught himself and forcefully pulled his hand back.

Nora offered a flat "Hello, Frederick" as a greeting.

Cassie immediately trotted over and tugged at her hand. Not seeing any pastries, her little face scrunched up, and she glared up at Nora with dissatisfaction.

"Mom, where are the pastries I asked you to buy?"

Nora crouched down, pulling Cassie into a hug, and said softly, "Mom told you already, I have something to take care of. I'll buy them next time."

Cassie shoved her away. The push wasn't hard, but the gesture felt like a stinging slap across Nora's face.

"But you're lying! You don't even have a job. There's no way you're busy."

Cassie stepped back, her small face flushed red. "You're just being petty. What did Aunt Seraphina ever do to you?"

As she spoke, she ran back in distress, throwing herself into Finnegan's arms and bursting into tears. "Now Aunt Seraphina doesn't have any pastries to eat!"

Finnegan soothingly patted her back, scooped her up, and looked at Nora with a frown. "Nora, how can you go back on a promise to a child? How is that setting a good example for her?"

Nora remained slumped on the floor, her heart turning to ice, her face full of sheer disbelief.

This was the child she had carried for ten months, risked her life to give birth to, and raised through five grueling years of widowhood.
