Imprisoned While Pregnant, She's Back for Payback novel Chapter 569

Henry tried to explain, but Tess looked completely unwilling to listen.

"Mm."

After he finished his long-winded explanation, the person before him responded with cold indifference. Henry couldn't help but clench his fists tighter.

"So why are you here?"

Tess's gaze swept over him.

At those words, Henry suddenly remembered the real purpose of his visit.

He'd been so caught up in their nonsense earlier that he'd forgotten.

"Didn't you agree to move back to the Ember Residence a few days ago? You even stayed there for a bit, but you didn't come back today. That's why I wanted to come by and see what was going on."

He smoothly delivered the explanation he'd rehearsed in the car.

Tess's expression didn't change in the slightest. "The bedroom wasn't comfortable. Once the new bedding is delivered, I'll consider moving back."

Only then did Henry nod in understanding, but his head couldn't help craning further inside. "I came in such a hurry. I see you're all having breakfast? I suppose you could spare an extra set of silverware for me?"

He rubbed his hands together expectantly.

"Bessie didn't prepare much. Come on in."

The implication was clear. He could eat, but he wouldn't be getting full.

Tess didn't hesitate and even pushed the door wide open to let him in.

After all, she still needed to maintain a surface-level peace with the Embers. If she rejected everything and confronted him at every turn, it would only make Henry suspicious.

Hearing this, joy spread across Henry's face. He stopped at the threshold and asked, "Should I take my shoes off?

"For a bunch of women, you sure prepared a lot of food."

Henry scanned the table and looked up.

"I'm a mother now. Being skinny isn't exactly a good thing."

Tess said flatly, holding Layla as she returned to the table.

Henry found an empty seat and sat down, but his eyes kept scanning the surroundings.

He'd already learned from his informant that the unusual worker who'd taken away the Nicholas couple was Tess's old friend Steven, who was also a prominent expert at the Nexus Research Institute in Aetheris.

He'd taken the Nicholas couple away for Tess's sake, so before dawn even broke, he'd rushed to Evermount Heights, hoping to get there first and catch them.

"There are only a few of you here. Why are there four extra sets of silverware?"

Henry looked around but found nothing unusual. His gaze settled on the table before lifting to fix on Tess with piercing intensity.

One or two extra sets would be one thing, but four at once was suspicious.

Connor wore a white suit. Compared to Marc, he appeared more composed and gentlemanly.

"Mr. Ember, breaking and entering without permission isn't right, you know."

He smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners, yet something about it sent a chill down your spine—like a mob boss who could order a hit without ever dropping that grin.

Henry's brow furrowed, but his feet took a step back.

After all, these two men were quite famous.

"Great, you started eating before I even got here."

Another voice cut through the room, confident and clear.

Abel bounded over to Tess, full of cheerful energy.

With the arrival of these three people, the extra three sets of silverware on the table suddenly made perfect sense.

Henry's expression turned rather unpleasant.

"What's wrong? Are you disappointed to see me?"

Abel crossed his arms and looked Henry up and down, his face scrunched up without the slightest attempt to hide his distaste.

Connor and Marc were already major players far beyond his reach, and with Abel now showing up as well, the situation had become even more impossible for Henry to handle.
