The golden leash sat closed around the neck of THE True Human Emperor.
And beside him, his clone trembled.
The crowned manifestation of blood shuddered once in the crossing-dark as its crimson gold light guttered and dimmed, and then it came apart, seemingly starved of everything that had sustained it, scattering into fading motes that dimmed and went out between one breath and the next!
Gone. As though the band at his throat had reached through him and unmade even the works of his blood!
Yrsa watched the motes fade.
Then she floated over to him, unhurried, and took his hand in hers, and with the casual efficiency of a clerk testing a seal... she broke his finger.
CRACK!
The bone snapped sideways under her grip, and blood welled dark at the joint, and the finger stayed broken! No stellar light rushed to it. No mending crawled beneath the skin. Nothing in him rose to answer the injury at all, and Noah allowed every bit of it to happen as he gazed at her coldly, his expression unmoving over a seemingly leashed and powerless body!
Yrsa looked at the broken finger for a moment longer. Then she released his hand, and nodded slowly.
"I am entirely surprised." She drifted back half a step as her pale eyes stayed on his face. "Do you know how many times I have stood before a leader and offered this exact exchange? Their freedom for their people’s. I have offered it to sovereigns of clusters of Observable Existences. To Primeval things with congregations beyond count. To kings whose subjects sang their names in numbers that bent the air."
She shook her head once. "Leaders rarely put themselves on the line for their people. Almost never. They would rather their people die, every last one of them, than give up their rulership. They tell themselves they will avenge the dead after, as if vengeance were a kind of protection they could pay in arrears. I have heard that reasoning so many times I could recite it in my sleep."
Her gaze moved over the golden band at his throat.
"You actuslly stood for your people! For that... I will stick to my word, and release your people."
She raised her fingers and gestured once!
The shrouded beings appeared around them in silence, white-wrapped figures with Loom-rivers turning in orbit, circling Noah in a loose ring with their presense registering nowhere, and one of them drifted forward bearing a set of golden chains that uncoiled in the dark and wound themselves around Noah’s hands, coiling wrist to wrist in dazzling links that clicked softly as they settled!
And Noah did not watch the chains.
He gazed past them, at Skallagrim.
The Blood Sovereign still stood half-bound where she had left him, the wedged band at his throat, and the eyes of this Descendant were RAGING! Crimson gold seas churned in them with a violence that had no outlet, fixed on the leashed figure of the man who had rewritten his lineage, and his shroud of unpaid deaths strained against the band in useless ragged pulses!
Yrsa waved her hand.
The hundreds of Argent Loom swords orbiting him dissolved, blades unraveling back into loomlight and draining away into the dark, and in the next instant she waved her hand again, and the half-closed Inhibitor around Skallagrim’s neck opened instsntly, releasing its grip clause by clause as it floated back across the crossing-dark toward her waiting palm!
HUUM!
Skallagrim erupted!
Power detonated out of the Descendant as his crimson gold seas came roaring back to full flood, all twenty of Attributes in his frame igniting at once, and the surrounding existence MELTED, the crossing-dark itself running and warping around his fury for light years as his fissures blazed and his shroud whipped wide!
And Yrsa smiled at it.
"I could have unshackled you after we left," she said, mild and even inside the melting dark. "But I did this here, in front of him, to show your master that I keep my promises."
Her head tilted slightly. "Be a good boy. I am still stronger than you, even while you are not inhibited. Your Master will be gone, and you... should take care of his Dimension, and his people. They will need it."
Her pale eyes did not so much as narrow against the heat of him. "And if we notice anything here that draws our attention again... I cannot promise we will not be back, to put this whole Dimension through processing under full inhibition. So."
A small nod, the nod of a keeper closing up for the day. "Do not let your master’s actions be in vain. Okay?"

"Where did they go?" His voice came out low, and then it cracked upward! "WHERE?!"
