Chapter 106
I should have seen this coming sooner. Catherine was desperate, and
desperate wolves were dangerous.
When I returned to my desk, the office had filled with the usual
morning bustle. I noticed Megan was quieter today, keeping to herself
in her glass–walled office. Maybe the competition deadline was
stressing her out too. With only ten days left until submissions were
due, everyone in the design department seemed more focused.
I worked steadily through the morning, occasionally exchanging ideas
with Lisa. It felt good to have someone to bounce thoughts off of,
especially in this hostile environment. At least in the midst of all this
werewolf drama, I’d found one genuine person.
“That pendant design would look amazing with mother of pearl
inlay,” Lisa suggested during lunch.
“I was thinking the same thing,” I replied, surprised by how in sync
our aesthetic sensibilities were.
The workday passed relatively peacefully. I kept catching glimpses of
Megan’s cold stares, but she seemed too preoccupied to bother me
directly. Maybe with the competition looming, she’d finally decided
to focus on her own work instead of sabotaging mine.

Chapter 106
I was in my car, eyes closed and resting before driving home, when
my phone rang again. I glanced at the screen and felt a wave of
revulsion. Catherine.
My first instinct was to ignore it, but curiosity won out. What new
manipulative scheme was she trying now?
“Hello,” I answered flatly.
“Iris.” Catherine’s voice was sickeningly sweet. “How are you, darling?
It’s been too long since we’ve spoken.”
“What do you want, Catherine?”
She sighed dramatically. “Is that any way to talk to your mother? I’ve
been worried about you.”
“You’re not my mother,” I said coldly.
“Don’t be difficult, dear. Things have been so hard for the Stone
family lately. You working at that company… it must be exhausting
for you. You were never meant for that kind of life.”
I remained silent, letting her dig her own hole.
“I was thinking you should come home for dinner this weekend. The

pack misses you. Stone Manor is still your home, after all.”
I almost laughed out loud. “Is it? Strange, I don’t remember it feeling
like home.”
“Iris, please.” Her voice hardened slightly. “You’re working yourself to
the bone at that job. The Grey family protection is gone. It’s time to
come back where you belong.”
“And where is that, exactly?”
“With your family, of course! Your mother misses you. Even Kim has
been asking about you.”
That made me feel physically ill. Kim had never asked about me a day
in her life unless it was to figure out how to undermine me.
“I’ll think about it,” I said finally, an idea forming in my mind.
“Wonderful! This Saturday at seven? I’ll make your favorite dinner.”
“I said I’ll think about it.”
I hung up and stared at my phone, a cold smile spreading across my
face. “Catherine, you’re getting sloppy,” I whispered.

The invitation was obviously a trap. Catherine had never invited me
to dinner before unless she wanted something. And now, armed with
wolf’s bane and desperation, she was making her move.
I started my car, my mind already planning countermeasures. If
Catherine wanted to play games, I’d play–but I’d make sure I
controlled the board. This was an opportunity to gather evidence
against her, to prove how she’d been siphoning Stone family assets.
I dialed Rachel’s number. “Catherine invited me to Stone Manor for
dinner.”
“Tell me you said no,” Rachel replied immediately.
“Actually, I’m going to accept.”
“What? Iris, are you insane? She just bought wolf’s bane, that stuff is
poison!”
“Exactly.” I pulled out of the parking lot, feeling strangely energized.
“If Catherine wants to play games, I’ll play along. But this time, I’ll be
prepared.”
I had ten days until the design competition, but first, I had a trap to
turn around on its creator.
“Rachel, I need your help with something…”
