-technically, this was still my family home, even if it had never felt
like one. The scene in the living room confirmed my suspicions: Noah
Phillips sat on our sofa, wearing a light blue checkered shirt that
complemented his sandy brown hair. He looked every bit the
gentleman, his posture relaxed yet dignified, like he’d just stepped
out of some upper–class Moon Bay social event.

Chapter 107
“I was wondering when you’d arrive,” she said, walking toward me
with open arms. “I said to myself, why is this child not announcing
herself? Come in, come in!”
I sidestepped her attempted embrace with practiced ease. The last
thing I wanted was her hands on me, especially now that I knew she’d
been shopping for sleeping drugs.
“Sorry I’m late,” I said flatly, not bothering to offer an excuse.
Noah stood up quickly, his eyes lighting up when they met mine.
There was no mistaking that look–a mixture of admiration and
longing that made me both uncomfortable and slightly sad. We’d
known each other for years, and he’d never hidden his feelings for me,
even when I married Sebastien.
“Iris,” he said softly. “It’s good to see you.”
