Chapter 128
Iris’s POV
I rummaged through my purse, pushing aside tissues, lip balm, and a
small sketchbook until my fingers found the hard plastic edge of my
work badge. There it was, tucked away in the bottom corner. I pulled
it out and stared at my forced smile in the ID photo, taken on my first
day at Crescent Design.
“Damn it,” I muttered to myself.
I’d meant to return this along with cleaning out my desk when I
resigned, but in all the drama with Megan and the competition, I’d
completely forgotten. I glanced at the clock–just before nine,
darkness barely settling outside my window. Not too late to swing by
the office and finish what I’d started.
My wolf stirred restlessly within me, clearly not thrilled about
returning to a place associated with stress and confrontation. I placed
a hand on my stomach instinctively, a gesture that had become habit
these past weeks.
“It’ll be quick,” I promised myself. “In and out. Just need to grab my
sketches and return this badge.”

The drive to Crescent Design was quiet, streets emptying as the
workday ended. When I pulled into the parking lot, only a few cars
remained–likely the cleaning staff or dedicated employees working late. The building loomed ahead, its sleek glass exterior reflecting the
city lights, windows mostly dark except for sporadic illumination on
various floors.
I swiped my badge at the entrance, half–expecting it to be deactivated already. The green light blinked, granting me access one final time. The lobby echoed with my footsteps as I walked toward the elevator.
Once on my floor, I moved through the dim office, my enhanced
vision making navigation easy. My desk stood exactly as I’d left it- partially cleared, with a few personal items and sketches still in the
drawers. I knelt down and began pulling them out, my wolf’s nose
helping me locate exactly what I needed without turning on the
overhead lights.
“Found you,” I whispered, fingers brushing against the folder containing my original hand–drawn designs–previous concepts I’d
created before the competition. Not my best work, but still mine, and
I wasn’t about to leave them behind.
Suddenly, the fluorescent lights blazed on, flooding the space with
harsh brightness. I blinked, momentarily disoriented.
“What are you doing here?” Megan Claire’s voice cut through the

silence, sharp and accusatory.
I didn’t even turn around at first, continuing to collect my papers.
“Getting my things,” I replied evenly. “I forgot some sketches.”
“Your internship is over. You have no business being here after
hours.” Her heels clicked against the floor as she moved closer.
I finally stood and faced her, noting how her usually perfect
appearance seemed slightly disheveled. The past few days hadn’t
been kind to her reputation–being publicly exposed as a design thief
and subsequently blacklisted would do that.
“I found what I needed.” I held up the folder, then reached into my
pocket for my badge. “And I’m returning this.”
I placed the badge on the desk with a small click. Megan’s eyes
narrowed, her posture rigid with barely controlled fury.
“You know,” I said, unable to resist a parting shot, “you might want to
start clearing out your own desk. This position won’t be yours much
longer.”
Her face flushed red. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you? Using
your little alias to humiliate me.”
