Chapter 129
“Mr. Foster,” I greeted, trying to keep my voice neutral despite the
awkward situation. “I didn’t expect to see you here so late.”
“Just finished a meeting with Sebastien,” Marcus replied, his warm
smile a stark contrast to Sebastien’s cold demeanor. “What brings you
back? I thought you’d resigned.”
“Just retrieving the last of my designs and returning my badge,” I
explained, lifting the folder slightly. “Loose ends, you know.”
“So you’re really leaving us?” Marcus’s expression fell. “I was hoping
you might reconsider.”
I shook my head gently. “My mind is made up.”
“I was so impressed by your work in the competition, Iris,” Marcus
continued earnestly. ” Getting second place on your first try is
incredible. That’s why I can’t understand why you’d leave now, when
you’ve clearly got a bright future with us.”

“Marcus,” Sebastien’s deep voice cut in, his tone bored and dismissive.
“Let it go.”

Throughout this exchange, Sebastien hadn’t even glanced in my
direction, his attention seemingly fixed on something outside the
glass doors. The streetlights cast shadows across his sharp features,
highlighting the tension in his jaw.
“You know,” I said with my most professional smile, “I appreciate the
opportunity I had here, Mr. Foster. I truly do. But I’ve made my
decision, and adults don’t change their minds on a whim.”
“Are you going to Polaris Studio?” Marcus asked, genuine curiosity in
his voice.
I neither confirmed nor denied, simply maintaining my polite
expression.

“We’re not exactly inferior to Polaris, you know,” Marcus persisted, his
designer’s pride showing. He turned to Sebastien, clearly seeking
backup. “Isn’t that right, Sebastien?”
Sebastien finally looked up, his steel–gray eyes briefly meeting mine
before shifting to Marcus. “Enough, Marcus,” he said flatly. “If she’s
made up her mind to leave for a rival, we don’t beg for loyalty.”
He crushed his cigarette under his shoe with unnecessary force. “Why
waste time trying to impress someone who’s clearly made up her
mind to leave?”

Without waiting for a response, Sebastien turned and walked toward
his car, his long strides purposeful and dismissive.
Marcus looked bewildered by his boss’s behavior. “I’m sorry about
that,” he said quietly. “He’s been… tense lately.”
“Nothing to apologize for,” I replied, already moving toward the exit.
“Goodnight, Mr. Foster.”
The cool night air felt refreshing after the stifling atmosphere inside.
I drove home with my window cracked open, letting the breeze clear
my head and wash away the lingering scent of Sebastien’s cologne
that somehow still affected me more than I wanted to admit.
When I arrived at my building in Blue Harbor, a familiar figure was
waiting by the entrance. Jack Lowell stood there, a small box in his
hands, shifting his weight from one foot to another like he wasn’t
sure if he should stay or go.
“Mr. Lowell?” I called as I approached.
He turned, his weathered face brightening. “Ah, Iris! I was just about
to leave. Thought you might not be home.”
“What brings you by?” I asked, genuinely curious.
