Chapter 148
God, I sounded pathetic. But I couldn’t stop myself.
The security guard’s expression didn’t change. “I can leave it for him at the desk if you’d like, Miss Claire.”
Before I could respond, the sound of laughter floated in from the entrance. I turned to see a small group entering the building, and there in the center–like she belonged there–was Iris fucking Stone.
“That café next door is actually pretty decent,” she was saying, surrounded by admiring colleagues. “Nice change from the cafeteria. Makes me feel human again.
Human? The irony of her words wasn’t lost on me. She was as much a werewolf as any of us, though from a failing pack with questionable bloodlines.
But something was different about her. Gone was the mousy, forgettable intern. This Iris Stone walked with confidence, dressed impeccably in a tailored navy pantsuit that hugged her figure perfectly. Her golden hair was swept up in an elegant twist, and she carried a designer handbag that probably cost more than most people made in a month.
What made my stomach twist was the subtle scent clinging to her–Sebastien’s scent. Not just the casual interaction kind, but the intimate kind that comes from close contact. My nostrils flared involuntarily, my wolf growing more agitated by the second.
1 couldn’t stand it anymore. Before I could think better of it, I marched straight toward her group.
“Well, well, I called out, loud enough to draw attention from everyone in the lobby. “If it isn’t Stone herself. Didn’t you quit a few weeks ago? Something about Crescent Design not being the right fit for you?”
The conversation around her stopped. All eyes turned to us, and I felt a surge of satisfaction at having disrupted her little moment of glory.
Iris turned slowly, her expression momentarily surprised before settling into cool composure. “I seem to recall you quitting more recently than I did, she
said, her voice even. “Though under rather different circumstances, wouldn’t you say?”
The implied reference to my plagiarism scandal made my blood boil. How dare she bring that up?
“Funny how the moment I leave, you come crawling back,” I spat, stepping closer. “Got your eye on someone in particular here at Crescent? Someone whose attention you’re desperate for?”
I wanted to see her flustered, wanted her to show some sign of gujft or shame. Instead, she stepped closer, her eyes locked on mine. For a brief, unsettling moment, I felt like prey.
‘Claire,” she said, her voice carrying easily in the now–silent/lobby, “you might want to stop embarrassing yourself. Unlike you, I’m actually here to work, not to chase after my boss,” She glanced pointedly at the lunch container in my hand, ‘I don’t need to resort to bringing food like some desperate ex.”
A few snickers erupted around us. My cheeks burned with humiliation and rage,
“At least I’m honest about what I want,” I hissed, “Not like some people who pretend to be here for work while secretly planning to get knocked up for a Grey family inheritance,”
Iris’s eyes widened slightly–I’d hit a nerve. The memory of the medical report I’d glimpsed at the clinic flashed in my mind. Pregnant. The timing matched perfectly with when she’d still been living with Sebastien.
“I know all about your little secret,” I said, raising my voice. “I may not be a creative director anymore, but I did see you at the clinic. I saw your test results.

Chapter 148
Planning on trapping him with a baby, were you? Or were you there to get rid of it because you don’t even know who the father is?”
The lobby went completely silent. I saw shock register on Iris’s face, followed by something darker. For a moment, I felt triumphant. I’d finally cracked that
perfect composure.
