Chapter 214
“You’ve embarrassed the entire family,” Thomas continued, his voice rising. “Leaving the event early, with Sebastien Grey no less. The rumors are already starting. And now I’m hearing reports of fire trucks at the estate! What game are you playing?”
I listened to him rant, almost unable to believe what I was hearing. The family home was burning, Sebastien was bleeding out beside me and Thomas was worried about gossip and appearances.
“Someone set fire to my father’s study,” I cut in, my voice steady. “They were trying to destroy his records. And then they tried to kill us with silver bullets when we recovered the safe. Does that sound like a game to you?”
The silence on the other end was telling.
“L… what are you talking about?” Thomas stammered, but I could hear the false note in his voice.
“I think you know exactly what I’m talking about,” I replied. “And we will discuss it, at length. But right now, I’m a bit busy making sure Sebastien doesn’t bleed out from a silver bullet wound he took protecting me.”
“Silver bullet?” Thomas’s voice rose an octave. “Hunters?”
“We’ll talk later,” I said firmly, and hung up before he could respond.
I set the phone down, refocusing on Sebastien. The car swerved slightly as Daniel took a sharp turn, and I braced myself to keep pressure
on the wound. The bleeding had slowed, but Sebastien’s skin felt clammy under my touch.
I studied his face, memories washing over me. The cold distance between us, the calculated cruelty, the way he’d abandoned me on what
should have been our vow renewal day. Yet I couldn’t reconcile that man with the one who had just taken a bullet to protect me.
“Why did you have to play hero?” I whispered, not expecting any response.
To my surprise, his eyelids fluttered open, revealing those dark eyes that had always seemed to see right through me. They fixed on me
with unexpected clarity given his condition.
“You okay?” The words were barely audible, strained with pain, but the concern was unmistakable.
I stared at him, momentarily speechless. Here he was, bleeding from a silver bullet wound, and his first words were to check if I was
alright?
“You’re asking if I’m okay?” I finally managed. “What kind of stupid question is that?”
He tried to shake his head, wincing at the movement. His lips parted as if to say something more, but pain seemed to overtake him.
Without thinking, I reached for his hand. “Don’t talk. We’re almost at the hospital. Daniel already contacted the werewolf medical team.

And that realization terrified me more than any hunter ever could.
