Jealousy Alpha’s Regret
Chapter 217
Iris’s POV
The operating room doors swung open, and my heart seemed to stop. A team of nurses and doctors wheeled out the gurney, and I finally saw him– Sebastien, lying motionless under stark white sheets. His face was so pale it nearly matched them. An oxygen mask covered the lower half of his face, and thick bandages wrapped around his head where they’d operated to remove the bullet. I’d never seen him look so… helpless.
“Mrs. Stone?” The doctor–a petite woman with tired eyes–approached me. ‘Mr. Gray is stable for now, but I need to be honest with you. While we’ve removed the silver compounds and stopped the bleeding, we can’t determine when he’ll regain consciousness. The next forty–eight hours will be critical.”
I tried to form words, but my throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper. William Grey stepped forward beside me, thanking the doctor profusely as I stared at Sebastien being wheeled down the hallway toward his private room.
I followed several steps behind William, watching as he immediately took the chair closest to the bed once we were in the room. He clasped Sebastien’s limp hand between both of his own weathered ones, murmuring soft encouragements that weren’t meant for me to hear. The room felt suffocatingly quiet except for the steady beeping of monitors.
Not knowing what to do with myself, I moved to a small table in the corner and poured a glass of water for William. As I turned to bring it to him, a wave of
dizziness hit me without warning. I grabbed the edge of the table, hoping he hadn’t noticed.
“Iris, sit down before you fall down,” William commanded without looking up from Sebastien.
“I’m fine,” I insisted, though my voice sounded thin even to my own ears. “Just tired.”
“You’re absolutely not fine,” came a familiar voice from the doorway. Rachel stood there, arms crossed, her expression somewhere between worry and
exasperation. “God, Iris, you look like death warmed over.”
She crossed the room quickly, taking the water glass from my hand and guiding me firmly to a chair.
“I called her,” William explained when I shot him a questioning look. “Someone needs to look after you while we wait.”
Rachel knelt in front of me, keeping her voice low. “Iris, you need to rest. You’ve been through hell tonight, and…” she glanced around before whispering, ‘you need to think about the little wolf cubs, too.”
1 looked down at my stomach, still flat to anyone who didn’t know, but carrying a life that had nearly been extinguished tonight alongside mine. My throat
tightened painfully.
“I know,” I whispered, “but he got shot because of me, Rachel. He was protecting me and…” I couldn’t bring myself to say the word “babies” with William right there. “He didn’t even hesitate. One second I saw the gun, and the next he was just… there.”
The memory flashed through my mind–Sebastien’s body jerking as the bullet hit him, the look of fierce determination in his eyes just before pain overtook his features. My stomach twisted with guilt.
“Iris,” William’s voice pulled me back to the present. “Your friend is right. You should go home and rest. Daniel can drive you.
“William, I…” I looked at Sebastien’s still form, tubes and wires connecting him to machines. I can’t just leave him like this.”
William’s expression softened unexpectedly. “Child, you can’t help him by making yourself sick. He’s stable. We have security posted. The best thing you can do right now is take care of yourself.”

I knew they were right. Logically, I knew it. But something in me couldn’t bear the thought of walking away while Sebastien lay there, vulnerable and
wounded because of me.
“This happened because of me,” I said quietly but firmly. “I was the target. He took that bullet for me. I can’t just walk away and go to bed like nothing
happened.”
William studied me for a long moment, his eyes–so much like Sebastien’s–seeing more than I wanted them to.
“How about this,” he finally said, his tone making it clear this wasn’t really a suggestion. “You go home tonight, get cleaned up, get some rest. Come back tomorrow. But,” he raised a finger as I opened my mouth to argue, “only if you take care of yourself properly between now and then.”
