Chapter 230
Sebastien’s POV
I sat in the back of the car, staring at nothing as Daniel navigated the streets away from the hospital. I knew she would leave, but she
just… left, without a single glance back. Like I meant nothing. My jaw clenched tight enough to hurt, and I tasted the metallic hint of
blood where I’d bitten the inside of my cheek.

“Grey sir, are you alright?” Daniel’s eyes flickered to the rearview mirror, watching me carefully. His scent carried worry, mixed with the
faint antiseptic smell that clung to both of us from the hospital.
I gave a dismissive grunt, turning to look out the window. Trees blurred past, shadows stretching like running wolves in the fading light.
My chest wound throbbed dully, a constant reminder of the bullet I’d taken for her. And what had it gotten me? Nothing. She’d cared for
me out of obligation, nothing more.
The thought shouldn’t bother me. Our marriage was a contract, a business arrangement. So why did my wolf pace restlessly beneath my
skin, agitated by her absence? Why did the hospital room feel emptier when she walked out? Why did I still catch myself inhaling deeply,
searching for traces of her scent?
By the time we pulled up to the Grey family estate, darkness had settled completely. Through the windows, I could already see my
grandfather waiting in the living room, his silhouette unmistakable after all these years. Perfect. Just what I needed–an interrogation
when all I wanted was silence.
“We’re here, sir,” Daniel said unnecessarily as the car stopped.
I pushed the door open before he could come around to help me, ignoring the sharp pain that shot through my chest. The last thing I
needed was to appear weak. Daniel hovered nearby as I made my way to the entrance, ready to catch me if I stumbled. I wouldn’t give him
the satisfaction.
As I stepped into the foyer, Grandfather was already moving toward me, his keen eyes scanning behind me, clearly looking for someone
else. For her.
“Iris? Where is she? Why isn’t she with you?” His questions came rapid–fire, his disappointment evident before I’d even answered.
“The person you want to see isn’t here,” I replied, my voice colder than I intended. A flash of pain crossed his face, and something like
guilt twisted in my stomach, but I pushed it away. I wasn’t responsible for his expectations.
The disappointment in his eyes sharpened to something like accusation. I brushed past him, heading for the stairs. I didn’t need this right
now.
“Sebastien.” His voice stopped me. “What happened?”
I turned slowly, fighting the urge to wince as the movement pulled at my stitches. “Nothing happened. She took care of me at the
hospital. I’m discharged. End of story.”

And you let her leave? Just like that?” He tapped his cane against the floor, a habit that always betrayed his irritation.

“She was just repaying a debt. It was a transaction, nothing more. Why would I thank her? The words sounded hollow even to my own ears. “We have a contract, nothing more.”
Grandfather’s cane struck the floor harder this time. Not enough to damage the hardwood, but enough to make me flinch internally.
