Chapter 237
Iris’s POV
Dina will notice I’m missing soon, I thought calmly. This might be perfect–draw out whoever’s been attacking us.
They carried me through what felt like a service entrance and loaded me into what I guessed was a car trunk. I remained limp but mentally alert, tracking our route by the turns and timing. Right turn leaving the estate, straight for about ten minutes, another right…
“That was easier than I thought,” a gruff voice said from the front seat, “Thought she’d put up more of a fight, being a wolf and all.
“Shut up,” another man snapped. “We’re not done yet. And remember what the boss said–no funny business with her.”
I almost smiled in the darkness. Funny business? These idiots have no idea who they’re dealing with.
After about forty–five minutes and several turns that suggested we were heading toward the industrial district, the car stopped. The trunk opened, and rough
hands pulled me out. The air smelled of rust and damp concrete–an abandoned warehouse, probably.
Someone yanked off my hood, and cold water splashed across my face. I gasped, blinking in the sudden light.
“Wake up, princess,” a man sneered, tossing an empty bucket aside.
As my vision cleared, I took in the scene: a large, mostly empty warehouse with broken windows and graffiti–covered walls. And there, looking smugly satisfied, stood people I recognized all too well–my uncle Thomas Stone, now head of the Stone family; Catherine, my stepmother, and Kim, my stepsister. Several hired muscle types stood guard around the perimeter.
Well, this is turning out to be quite the family reunion.
Kim stepped forward and shoved me hard. I stumbled backward but caught myself, instinctively protecting my abdomen.
“Not so high and mighty now, are you?” Kim hissed, her eyes flashing with werewolf amber. The hatred in her voice was almost childish in its intensity.
I looked at her calmly, saying nothing. My silence clearly unnerved her more than any comeback could have. She took a step back, looking confused by my
lack of reaction.
It’s almost funny how much she hates me just because I stood up to her once or twice.
Catherine moved toward me next, her perfectly manicured hand raised to slap me. I didn’t flinch, just met her gaze directly, my inner wolf growling protectively at the threat to our unborn pup.
“You ungrateful little- Catherine began, but Thomas grabbed her wrist before she could strike.
“Enough!” he barked. “Don’t be stupid. If she gets hurt, we’ll have the entire Grey pack hunting us down!‘
The fear in his voice when he mentioned the Grey pack was unmistakable. So he still has some sense left. Good to know.
Thomas approached me, trying to appear intimidating but failing miserably. I could smell the anxiety pouring off him.
“Now you listen here,” he said, his voice strained with forced authority. The situation is quite simple. Those people you’re living with so comfortably now? They don’t really care about you But we need that money you’ve been hoarding.

I remained silent, analyzing the situation. This wasn’t personal–this was desperation, pure and simple.
Thomas’s composure cracked as my silence continued. “Those loan sharks are like damn wolves themselves, breathing down my neck day and night!” His voice rose in pitch. “They’ve already roughed up some of our pack members. Who the hell do you think you are, living in luxury while the rest of your family
suffers?”
So that’s where all the family money went–gambling debts or bad investments.
“Debts have to be paid, I finally spoke, my voice steady. “That’s basic responsibility, Thomas. Something you clearly know nothing about.
His face contorted with rage, but fear held him back from striking me. Instead, he motioned to one of his men, who handed him my phone.
“Let’s see if your precious protectors are willing to pay for your safe return,” Thomas said, holding my phone up to my face to unlock it with facial
recognition.
I didn’t resist. I wanted to see exactly how far they would go. Thomas scrolled through my contacts and pressed call on Ethan’s number first, putting it on
speaker.
“Hello? Iris?” Ethan’s voice came through, sounding concerned.
