Chapter 249
Iris’s POV
I gently took Jack Lowell’s arm, deliberately turning my back on Catherine and Kim still kneeling in the street. “Jack, would you like to see those flowers in the garden? They’ve bloomed beautifully lately. We could take some back to put near your window–they help with sleep.”
Jack nodded, his weathered face relaxing slightly as he followed my lead away from the spectacle. I could feel Kim’s shocked gaze boring into my back, but I didn’t give her the satisfaction of a backward glance.
At least someone’s always in my corner, I thought, feeling a small wave of warmth despite the morning’s chaos. Kim probably hadn’t expected me
to dismiss her so completely. The thought brought a cold satisfaction that I wasn’t proud of but couldn’t deny.
As I closed my front door behind us, I immediately heard Kim’s fists pounding against it, her voice rising to a shrill pitch that made me wince.
“You ungrateful bitch! After everything our family has done for you! You’ve ruined the Stone family and you don’t show a shred of remorse! My
father took you in when no one wanted you!”
I frowned at the noise penetrating my walls. Without a word, I walked to my sound system and turned on some soft classical music, just loud enough to drown out the worst of Kim’s tirade.
“I’m sorry you have to witness this,” I told Jack, gesturing toward the comfortable living room sofa. “Would you like some tea?”
Jack Lowell’s eyes watched me with concern. “You don’t need to apologize, Iris. Are you alright?”
I gave him a small shrug. “I’m fine. This isn’t exactly new behavior.”
The pounding continued, Kim’s muffled insults still audible beneath Debussy’s gentle notes. I sighed, picking up my phone and dialing the Blue
Harbor security team.
“Hello, this is Iris Stone. There’s a disturbance outside my home that’s getting out of hand.” I glanced toward the window where I could see Catherine joining Kim in her shouting. “It’s becoming quite disruptive and could attract unwanted attention. When can you send someone to
handle this?”
I watched through the curtains as Catherine and Kim continued their performance, completely oblivious to how their behavior might expose werewolf business to the human neighbors gathering to watch. “They don’t even realize how their tantrum could compromise all of us,” I murmured, more to myself than to Jack.
“What exactly did they want from you?” Jack asked, settling onto the sofa with a slight wince that reminded me of his age.
“Let me get you some water,” I said, heading to the kitchen. “Catherine wants me to somehow convince the werewolf council that Thomas’s confession was a misunderstanding. As if I could–or would–do that after he admitted to killing my father.”
