“Family?” I said, the word tasting bitter on my tongue. “Is that what we are?”
Catherine nodded eagerly, mistaking my question for consideration. “Yes! Family! And family forgives! Family helps each other!”
“I’ll do anything,” Catherine continued, desperation making her voice crack. “Whatever you want, it’s yours!”
“What could you possibly offer me?” I asked, genuinely curious about her plan.
Her eyes gleamed with sudden calculation. “Your father’s werewolf heritage items! The ceremonial items from the Stone legacy–I have them all! They should be yours by birthright. I’ll return them if you help Thomas!”
My attention sharpened. “My father’s belongings? The ones you claimed were lost in the move after his death?”
Around us, the human neighbors were whispering among themselves, some openly recording the scene on their phones. I could see their judging looks, their curiosity about this family drama playing out in public. I’d experienced those same looks my entire life–always the outsider, always the one being whispered about.
Jack Lowell had made his way to my side, his presence solid and reassuring. “Iris,” he said quietly, “if this is causing you distress, the werewolf council can handle it. I can ensure a fair resolution.”
I looked at Catherine and Kim, still kneeling before me, and felt a strange emptiness where satisfaction should have been. Once, I might have savored this moment, this reversal of our positions. But now, seeing them brought so low only made me tired.
