Chapter 30

I stood at the font of frin’s bed, watching her steeping form in the darkness Who were those men? And how did she escape, only to end up here steeping so peacefully? The fact that she was safe, yet shrouded in mystery I couldn’t grasp, only filed my raga.
The load was still betting from the scene at the hotel. The memory of race there, imagining her with Miles, churned in my gut like seld.
Terry muscle in my body felt tight with tage.
And here she was. Stepping peacefully. Like nothing had happened.
1 clenched my fists so hard my knuckles cracked. Why the hell had I been worried? Why had I practically torn apart that hotel looking for her? She clearly didn’t need my help. Didn’t want either.
My wolf paced restlessly inside me, agitated and confused. If she hadn’t gone up to Miles’s room, where had she been? And why had I cared so fucking much?
I stared at her face, relaxed in sleep, and my anger intensified. She’d been safe all along while I’d been losing my mind imagining the worst.
“If you hadn’t gotten into his car in the first place, I wouldn’t have had to waste my time,” I muttered under my breath.
The sound of her soft breathing only pissed me off more. Without thinking I reached for the light switch and flipped it on.
The sudden brightness flooded the room. Iris winced and stirred, her brow furrowing as she slowly opened her eyes. When she saw me, something changed in her expression. Her eyes turned colder than I’d ever seen them, and it stoked my rage even higher.
“What do you want?” she asked, her voice thick with sleep but sharp with irritation.
I laughed, a harsh sound even to my own ears. “What do I want? I want to know what the hell you think you’re doing.”
She sat up, pulling the blanket around her. “I was sleeping until you barged in and turned on the light.”
“Don’t play dumb,” I snapped. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
Her face remained impassive, those cold eyes staring back at me. This apologetic, trying to explain herself.
wasn’t the Iris I knew. The Iris I married would have been nervous,
“No, I really don’t,” she replied calmly. “But I’m sure you’re about to tell me.”
My temper flared. “You knew exactly what that creep Miles wanted when he invited you to his room. You knew what he thought of you, what he expected. But you still got into his car, didn’t you? All for some attention? Is that what you’re after now, Iris? Ready to climb into any man’s bed who shows interest?”
I watched her face for any sign of guilt or shame, but instead, I saw her lips curl into something between a smile and a sneer.
“Are you serious right now?” she asked, her voice deceptively soft. “You’re actually standing in my bedroom at-” she glanced at the clock, “—one in the morning, accusing me of sleeping around?”
“I saw you take his key card,” I growled. “Don’t deny it.”
