Chapter 31
I stood there, seething, looking at her back turned against me. She’d turned away from me, her back a clear dismissal. I wanted to grab her, force her to look at me, to explain herself. But something held me back.
A cold laugh escaped my lips. “You were quick enough to sleep with me when you needed the Stone family’s alliance.”
I turned and yanked the door open, slamming it behind me with enough force to rattle the paintings on the hallway wall. I pulled out my phone and dialed Blake’s number.
“Moonshade Bar. Now, I barked as soon as he answered.
I needed a drink. Several drinks. Anything to wash away the image of Iris’s cold eyes and the sting of her words.
I had just hung up when I spotted my grandfather standing in the doorway of his study, watching me with narrowed eyes. He took a step toward me, his cane tapping against the hardwood floor. Even in his robe, be radiated the authority of an Alpha.
“Sebastien,” he said, his voice carrying that unmistakable command. “A word.”
I swallowed my frustration. There was no escaping this. William Grey didn’t make requests; he gave orders.
“It’s late, Grandfather,” I tried anyway.
“Now.” He turned and walked back into his study, expecting me to follow
I closed my eyes briefly, reining in my wolf, before entering the study and closing the door behind me.
William stood by the fireplace, his silver hair catching the glow of the embers. “What’s going on between you and Iris?”
I stiffened. “What do you mean?”
His cane tapped impatiently. “Don’t play games with me, boy. You two have entered the Cooling Period. I want to know why.“,
I was surprised he knew, but kept my face neutral. Had Iris told him? The thought made my jaw clench.
‘It’s exactly as you’ve heard,” I replied, keeping my voice level. “We’ve entered the Cooling Period.”
William’s cane struck the floor with a sharp crack. “That’s not what I asked I want to know why my grandson and his mate are suddenly divorcing after only two years.”
I didn’t answer immediately, sliding my hands into my pockets where my fingers found my lighter. I flipped it open and closed repeatedly, a nervous habit I’d developed years ago.
The marriage was your idea, not mine, I finally said. “You never asked what I wanted.”
“I’m asking now,” he said, his voice softening slightly. I’ve watched you two for two years. I just don’t believe there’s nothing between you.”
I thought of Iris in her bed, her eyes cold as ice as she told me I was nothing to her. The memory made something twist painfully in my chest.
“Believe what you want,” I said. ‘It doesn’t change anything.”
