Chapter 44
Iris’s POV
My phone buzzed against the coffee table, interrupting the rare
moment of peace I’d found in my Blue Harbor apartment. I glanced at
the screen, noticing a social media notification. Jennifer Watson had
posted something new. I hesitated before tapping on it, already
sensing it would be something designed to get under my skin.
I was right.
The photo showed Sebastien and Megan at Moonlight Lounge, their
faces illuminated by the bar’s dim lighting. They were looking at each
other with what appeared to be intense intimacy. My stomach
tightened as I scrolled through the comments.
“Alpha and Luna, a perfect match!”
“Finally back with someone worthy of his bloodline.”
“This is how it should have been all along.”
I let out a cold laugh. Jennifer knew exactly what she was doing,
posting this for me to see. Without hesitation, I tapped the like

button. Let her think I was unbothered. These childish tactics weren’t
going to work on me anymore.
I set my phone down and leaned back against the couch. God, I was
tired. Not just physically, but deep in my bones. The kind of
exhaustion that comes from carrying too many secrets and fighting
too many battles.
I turned off the lights and lay down, staring at the ceiling as darkness
enveloped the room. Sebastien’s life wasn’t my concern anymore.
Whatever he did with Megan or any other female wolf was his
business now.
His words from the other night echoed in my head: “Not liking just
means not liking.” I’d overheard him saying that to his grandfather
outside the study at Grey Manor. The memory still stung, but it also
reinforced my decision to leave. There was no point holding onto
someone who had never wanted me in the first place.
I closed my eyes, feeling surprisingly calm. This was the right path-
focusing on my career, building a life for myself and my unborn child in the human world. For once, I fell asleep without tossing and
turning, free from the weight of trying to please someone who would
never be pleased.

Chapter 44
Morning sunlight filtered through my specially designed privacy
curtains, casting a warm glow across my bed. I allowed myself a few
moments of peaceful half–sleep, savoring the quiet. No staff moving
around, no pack members to face, no cold husband to avoid. Just me.
I finally pushed myself up, stretching my arms above my head. My
muscles felt loose, relaxed after the first decent night’s sleep I’d had
since leaving Grey Manor.
In the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and washed my face, studying
my reflection. I looked… different. Calmer. More myself. I applied
minimal makeup–just enough to look professional–and pulled my
hair into a neat ponytail.
Back in my bedroom, I selected a navy blue blouse and tailored pants.
that were both professional and comfortable. The outfit was practical
too–designed with quick release seams that would allow for
emergency shifting if needed. Living among humans meant planning
for every contingency.
I packed my work materials neatly into my leather bag, double-
checking that I had everything I needed for the day’s designs. As I
prepared to leave, a strange lightness filled my chest. I didn’t have to
report my whereabouts to anyone. Didn’t have to worry about
disappointing the Grey family or living up to impossible standards.
I caught myself smiling in the mirror by the front door. “New day, new
