Chapter 45
She’s been watching me all morning, I thought, my wolf senses picking
up hér elevated heart rate. Humans think they’re so subtle, but every
change in their body gives them away.
I selected a high–protein lunch from the cafeteria options and found
a quiet corner table. The food was decent, though nothing compared
to the meals at Grey Manor. Still, there was something satisfying
about eating alone, on my own terms.
I noticed Lisa making her way toward me, carrying the exact same
meal I’d chosen. She was trying so hard to look casual that it was
almost comical.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked with an overly surprised tone. “What a
coincidence running into you here!”
I had to bite back a smile. Such an obvious little setup. Humans are
adorable with their little schemes.
“Sure,” I replied simply, watching her settle into the chair across from
Lisa fidgeted with her napkin before speaking. “Hey Iris, funny

running into you here at lunch.”
“Yes, quite the coincidence,” I replied dryly, my inner wolf amused by
her transparent attempt at casual conversation.
I could tell she was working up to something, so I waited patiently,
letting her stew in her own nervousness.
“So,” she finally blurted out, “do you know Sebastien Grey personally?
Everyone’s talking about how he seems particularly interested in your
project.”
I took a bite of my salad, considering my response. “I know him. He’s
the CEO–who wouldn’t know him?” I paused, then added with complete honesty, “If you’re asking if we’re close, then no, we’re not.”
It wasn’t a lie. Whatever Sebastien and I had been to each other,
“close” was never the right word.
Lisa seemed disappointed by my straightforward answer, clearly hoping for juicier gossip. I continued eating, letting the conversation
lapse into silence.
As I stood to get some water, I told Lisa, “You go ahead and finish. I’m
just going to grab a drink.”

I walked toward the break area, silently amused by Lisa’s crestfallen
expression. The poor girl had probably expected some scandalous
revelation about the mysterious CEO and his new intern.
Just as I reached for the water dispenser, a strong hand grabbed my
arm and pulled me into the nearby break room. I heard the lock click
before I could fully process what was happening.
My heart raced as I recognized Sebastien’s scent immediately–pine,
leather, and that distinctive note that was uniquely him. My wolf
stirred restlessly, responding to his proximity despite my brain’s
objections.
I looked up to find Sebastien’s face dark with anger, his eyes boring
into mine with an intensity that made my breath catch.
“What do you want?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
He leaned in closer, his breath hot against my ear as he whispered a
single word: “Not familiar?”
A chill ran down my spine. He must have overheard my conversation
with Lisa. I refused to meet his gaze, but he grabbed my chin, forcing
me to look at him.
What I saw in his eyes terrified me–raw anger swirling with
