Chapter 49
Iris’s POV
“Hello?” I answered Alpha William Grey’s call, moving toward the
empty break room for privacy.
“Iris, my dear,” William’s warm voice came through the speaker. “How
are you?”
“I’m fine,” I replied, feeling a twinge of guilt at how I’d left things. “Is
everything okay?”
“Yes, yes. I’m calling because we have important Pack members
visiting tomorrow for our quarterly tribal council meeting.” His voice
was gentle. “There’s a dinner tonight to welcome them, and I’d like
you to attend.”
My heart sank. Going back to Grey Manor meant facing Sebastien, and
all the whispers and stares from the Pack.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I said carefully. “Sebastien and I
aren’t exactly on speaking terms right now, and I need to be careful
about… my health.” I almost mentioned the pregnancy but stopped
myself. William didn’t know yet, and I wasn’t ready for that

conversation.
“I understand your hesitation,” William replied. “But you’re still a
member of this Pack, Iris. Your room is ready, and there are people
here who miss you.”
I closed my eyes, feeling trapped. The cooling period before our
divorce would end soon, but technically, I was still Sebastien’s mate
according to wolf law. And my baby, regardless of my relationship
with Sebastien, would have Grey blood.
“William, I appreciate the invitation, but-”
“Please, Iris,” he interrupted, his voice softening. “To keep up
appearances.”
Damn. How could I say no to the man who had shown me more
fatherly affection than anyone since my own father died?
“Alright,” I conceded with a sigh. “I’ll come for dinner, but I’m not sure
about staying overnight.”
“Thank you, my dear. I’ll see you this evening.”
As I ended the call, I leaned against the wall, suddenly exhausted. My
first trimester fatigue was hitting hard today. Despite everything that

had happened with Sebastien, I still felt a responsibility toward
William. He had always treated me with kindness, even when his
grandson made it clear our marriage was just a political arrangement.
I gathered my things and headed for the elevator, mentally preparing
myself for the evening ahead.
As the doors opened to the lobby, I steeled myself for the taxi ride to
Grey Manor.
But as I pushed through the revolving doors into the cool evening air,
I froze.
A familiar black Range Rover was parked directly in front of the
building. And leaning against the passenger door, arms crossed and
expression cold, was Sebastien.
My heart skipped a beat before racing uncomfortably fast. “What are
you doing here?” I demanded, stopping several feet away from him.
“Alpha William sent me to pick you up,” he replied flatly, his eyes
traveling over me in a way that made my skin tingle despite my anger.
“I can get there myself,” I said, pulling out my phone to call a taxi.
The last thing I needed was to be trapped in a car with him.

Sebastien pushed himself off the car and took a step toward me. “Get in the car, Iris.”
“I don’t need an escort,” I insisted, backing up slightly. My wolf was on high alert, protective instincts flaring.
His jaw tightened. “This isn’t about what you need. It’s about what the Pack needs. Now get in the car and stop making a scene.”
I glanced around, noticing a few colleagues watching our exchange with undisguised curiosity. Great. More fodder for the office gossip
mill.
“Fine,” I muttered, walking past him to the passenger door. “But only
because of Alpha William.”
–
The car interior smelled like him that distinctive blend of cedar and
something wild that I’d once found comforting. Now it just made me
tense, and my pregnancy–enhanced sense of smell made it even more
overwhelming. I rolled down the window slightly, hoping for fresh air
as I buckled my seatbelt and stared straight ahead.
We drove in complete silence for several minutes. The tension was
suffocating, filling every inch of the car. I kept my gaze fixed out the
window, watching the buildings give way to trees as we headed
toward the outskirts of town.

From the corner of my eye, I could see Sebastien’s fingers drumming
against the steering wheel, a telltale sign of his agitation. Several
times, he inhaled as if about to speak, then changed his mind.
I refused to break the silence. Let him stew in his own discomfort. I
had more important things to worry about now–a future to plan for
two.
