Chapter 50
The trees grew denser as we approached Grey territory. Despite
myself, I felt a strange pull as we neared the place that had been my
home for two years. My wolf recognized the familiar scents and
territory, even if my human side wanted nothing more than to turn
around.
When we finally pulled up to the security gate of Grey Manor,
Sebastien cleared his throat. “William has missed you,” he said, his
voice stiff. “The Pack has too.”
I turned to look at him, surprised by this unexpected comment. His profile was sharp against the fading light, his expression unreadable.
“I’ve missed William,” I admitted cautiously. “And some members of
the Pack.”
The implication hung between us that he wasn’t among those I missed. Sebastien’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing more as the
gates swung open.
As soon as the car stopped in front of the manor, I unclipped my
seatbelt and reached for the door handle.

“Iris,” Sebastien said, stopping me with just my name. When I
reluctantly met his gaze, something unfamiliar flickered in his eyes.
“William truly wants you here. The Pack needs you here.”
I stared at him, trying to decipher what he wasn’t saying. My hand
instinctively moved to my abdomen, and I wondered if he could sense
the changes in me–if his wolf could detect our children growing
inside me. The thought made me panic slightly.
“And what about you, Sebastien? What do you want?”
He looked away, breaking our eye contact. “What I want doesn’t
matter anymore, does it?”
Without waiting for a response, I pushed open the door and stepped
out, refusing to acknowledge the strange ache his words had caused. I
walked quickly toward the entrance, not looking back to see if he
followed.
Inside, a young Pack member greeted me with a surprised smile. “Iris!
You’re back!”
“Just for tonight,” I clarified, following her upstairs to my old room.
The physical exertion made me slightly dizzy–another pregnancy
symptom that was becoming more frequent.

The room looked exactly as I’d left it, except for one addition – a cedar
wood box sitting on the bed.
“We’ve been maintaining your room as Alpha William instructed,” she explained, hovering by the door. “That box contains some items you
left behind. The Alpha wasn’t sure if you’d want them.”
I approached the box cautiously and lifted the lid. Inside were the gifts Sebastien had given me over the years – a diamond bracelet for our first anniversary, a wolf pendant I’d never worn, and several
photos from our wedding day. My throat tightened at the sight of my
smiling face beside Sebastien’s stoic one.
“Thank you,” I said to the young wolf. “You can get rid of these. They
don’t belong in my life anymore.”
She nodded and took the box, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I moved to the window, gazing out at the forest and grounds of Grey
Manor. The first time I’d come to this room as Sebastien’s wife, I’d
stood in this exact spot, heart racing with hope and nerves. I’d
believed that time would soften him, that eventually he might come
to care for me.
What a foolish dream that had been.

Now I stood here with entirely different hopes and fears. In just over
seven months, I would be a mother. The children I carried would have
Grey blood, would be part of this Pack by birthright. How would I
navigate that? How would I give my children the security of Pack
bond’s while protecting them from the pain I’d experienced?
The grounds looked beautiful in the twilight, the forest line a dark,
shadow against the deepening blue sky. Despite everything, I had to
admit I’d missed this view, the sense of belonging to something
ancient and powerful. The Pack had accepted me, even when
Sebastien hadn’t.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.
“Iris?” The young Pack member had returned. “I thought you should
know those items you said to get rid of? Alpha Sebastien just took
them.”
–
I turned from the window, surprised. “Sebastien took them?”
She nodded. “Yes, ma’am. Just now.”
I thanked her again and returned to the window, feeling a strange
hollowness in my chest. Why would Sebastien want those things?
They were just reminders of a failed marriage, symbols of a
connection that had never truly existed.
