Chapter 7

Rachel’s expression softened, understanding what I wasn’t saying. Two years ago, I’d chosen Sebastien and this political marriage instead of pursuing my career. I’d chosen to help my family maintain protection from the Grey pack rather than following my passion.
“Well, you’re taking it now,” she said firmly. “That’s what matters.”
The rain had lightened to a drizzle by the time I returned to Grey territory, I’d taken a taxi, deliberately avoiding the main paths where I might
encounter other pack members. My clothes were still damp, clinging uncomfortably to my skin.
After a hot shower, I pulled on my softest sleep shirt and settled onto the bed with my tablet. Opening my design portfolio, I scrolled through
the sketches I’d created under my pseudonym “Aurora.”
I’d started the account on a whim, just to share my designs with the human world. I never expected it to gain a following, never thought I’d
receive commission requests from people who had no idea these designs came from a wolf’s hand.
Maybe this is fate, I thought, running my finger across a pendant design. Maybe I was always meant to find my way in the human world, away
from pack politics.
I lost myself in sketching, refining a design for hours until my eyes burned from staring at the screen. When I finally looked at the clock, it was
past 1 AM.
Shit, I set the tablet aside, remembering the tiny life growing inside me. I needed to be more careful now, get proper rest and nutrition. My hand drifted to my still–flat stomach. What kind of life could I give this child? Half–wolf, just like me, but would they face the same prejudice?
Almost without thinking, I reached for my phone and opened the social media app. My thumb hovered over the search bar before typing Sebastien’s name. His profile appeared immediately–he rarely posted, but others tagged him constantly.
The most recent photo made my breath catch. Taken at Moonlight Bar just hours ago, it showed Sebastien standing in the VIP section, his tall frame impossible to miss. Beside him stood a stunning blonde, their bodies close enough that her curves pressed against his side. His face was partially turned away from the camera, but I could see enough to know he wasn’t pushing her away.
I switched off the screen, a dull ache spreading through my chest. He’s not even trying to hide it anymore.
I set the phone down and slipped under the covers, closing my eyes. Tomanow I would meet with Marcus. Soon after, I’d find an apartment outside Grey territory. I needed to make concrete plans for my new life–a life where I wasn’t defined by my connection to Sebastien Grey,
Sleep had nearly claimed me when my phone rang, the shrill sound cutting through the silence. I fumbled for it, squinting at the bright screen showing Blake Thompson’s name. I blinked in surprise–Sebastien’s friend rarely contacted me directly.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Iris,” Blake’s voice sounded tense, almost rushed. “It’s Blake. Blake Thompson. Sebastien’s out of control. You need to come get him.”
My grip tightened on the phone. “Out of control? What do you mean?”
He came back to the bar and is losing it. Started shifting partially–his eyes are glowing, claws coming out. If he fully transforms in pubilee Biske didn’t need to finish the sentence. Public shifting was one of the gravest violations of wolf law.
