Chapter 92
Iris’s POV
The Uber driver barely slowed down when he dropped me off at Blue
Harbor. I mumbled a quick thank you and dragged myself toward the
entrance of my apartment building, exhaustion weighing on every
step. The emotional whiplash of the day–from Sebastien’s bizarre
behavior at the council office to Catherine’s soul–crushing confession
-had left me completely drained.
“Home sweet home,” I muttered to myself as I unlocked my door and
stepped inside. The familiar surroundings of my apartment welcomed
me like an old friend, the soft ambient light from the street lamps
filtering through the curtains creating gentle shadows across my
furniture.
I kicked off my shoes, not even bothering to place them neatly by the
door like I usually would. My gaze automatically drifted toward the
small collection of potted plants on my balcony. In the dim evening
light, I could see new sprouts pushing through the soil in one of
them.
“At least something’s going right,” I whispered, walking over to
inspect the tiny green shoots. The sight of new life emerging brought
a faint smile to my lips. These plants had become my silent

companions, their growth and vitality somehow soothing the wolf
inside me. Caring for them had become a ritual that kept me
grounded.
I grabbed my watering can from under the sink and carefully tended
to each plant, taking my time with the task. The routine was
comforting–something stable in my increasingly chaotic life.
“There you go,” I said softly, gently touching a leaf. “All better now.”
With that small task complete, the weight of the day crashed back
down on me. I collapsed onto my sofa, my body sinking into the
cushions. I stared at the ceiling, thoughts swirling in my head.
“When was the last time I did something just for me?” I wondered
aloud. “Something that wasn’t about Sebastien or the Grey family
or…” I placed my hand on my still–flat stomach, “…or you.”
For so long, my life had revolved around Sebastien Grey–first pining
for his affection, then enduring his indifference, and now fighting for
freedom from him. Even my job at Crescent Design kept me tethered
to him. It was exhausting to realize how little of my life was truly
mine.
My phone vibrated on the coffee table, startling me from my
thoughts. I glanced at the screen, expecting to see Catherine’s name

again. My face hardened as I snatched up the phone, ready to tell her
exactly where she could shove her family concerns.
“Listen, Catherine,” I snapped as I answered, not bothering to check
the caller ID, “I’ve said everything I need to say. You made it perfectly
clear that I was never-”
“Whoa, whoa! Not Catherine here,” Rachel’s familiar voice cut in.
“What the hell did she do now?”
I felt my entire body relax at the sound of my friend’s voice. “Rachel,”
I breathed. “God, I’m sorry. I thought you were my mother calling
back to harass me some more.”
“No worries,” Rachel replied easily. “But seriously, what’s going on?
You sound like you’re ready to tear someone’s throat out–and not in
the fun werewolf way.”
Despite everything, I found myself laughing. Leave it to Rachel to
make light of werewolf stereotypes. As one of the few humans who
knew about our existence, she never seemed intimidated by what we
were.
“It’s a long story,” I sighed, shifting to a more comfortable position on
the sofa. “But before I get into that, what’s up? Why are you calling so
late?”

“Oh! Right,” Rachel’s voice immediately took on an excited edge. “Iris,
Stone family is in some deep shit now, isn’t it? What the hell is
happening over there?”
I frowned, sitting up straighter. “What do you mean? What have you
heard?”
“Are you seriously asking me that? Your family is practically begging
for loans all over town! I heard from Mike–you know, the guy who
works at First National–that your uncle came in trying to secure a
massive loan against what’s left of your family estate.” Rachel paused
for dramatic effect. “And get this–he was rejected. The bank doesn’t
think they can repay it!”
My frown deepened as I processed this information. I knew the Stone
family’s finances were precarious after my confrontation with
