Chapter 93
Iris’s POV
“Oh, it gets better,” I continued, my pencil moving faster across the paper. “When I refused, she let slip that I was never anything more than a bargaining chip to her. She told Kim that I was ‘a burden she
was forced to accept.“”
“That absolute bitch!” Rachel exploded. “After everything you’ve done
for that family! I always knew she was terrible, but this is a new low,
even for her.”
I nodded, even though Rachel couldn’t see me. “She didn’t think I
could hear her. She thought I’d hung up when she was talking to
Kim.”
“Wait,” Rachel said after a moment. “Is ‘she trying to contact you
again? Is that why you answered the phone like you were ready to
commit murder?”
“Yeah,” I sighed. “She’s called three times since our conversation
ended. I finally blocked her number.”
There was a pause before Rachel asked hesitantly, “They didn’t…

harass you in person, did they?”
I laughed bitterly. “No, they wouldn’t dare come to Grey territory
without permission. Not anymore.”
“Good,” Rachel said firmly. “Because if they showed up at your door, I
was prepared to come over with a baseball bat. Human or not, I’d take
a swing at your evil mother.”
The mental image of Rachel confronting Catherine with a baseball
bat made me smile. “I’d pay good money to see that.”
We shared a laugh, and I felt some of the tension drain from my
shoulders. This was what I needed–someone who was simply on my
side, without ulterior motives or hidden agendas.
“Actually,” Rachel said, her voice taking on a curious tone, “there’s
something I’ve been wondering about.”
“What’s that?” I asked, still sketching absently.
“Your sister, Kim. Don’t you think it’s weird how she and Catherine
are so close? I mean, they look more alike than you and Catherine
ever did.”
My pencil stopped mid–stroke. “What do you mean?”

“I’m just saying… you and Catherine look nothing alike. But Kim? She’s practically Catherine’s mini–me.” Rachel paused. “And have you noticed how Catherine always treated Kim differently? I mean, beyond the obvious favoritism. It’s like… I don’t know. Like Kim was her real daughter and you weren’t.”
I felt my breath catch in my throat as Rachel’s words hit me. My mind immediately flashed back to all the times Catherine had treated Kim with a warmth and affection she’d never shown me. How she’d always brushed off any similarities between us, focusing instead on how much Kim resembled her.
“Iris? You still there?” Rachel asked when I didn’t respond.
“Yeah,” I managed, my voice suddenly hoarse. “I’m here. I just… I
never thought about it that way.”
Could it be possible? Could Catherine not be my biological mother?
The thought seemed absurd, yet… it would explain so much.
“I’m probably just being ridiculous,” Rachel backtracked quickly.
“Forget I said anything.”
But I couldn’t forget. My mind was racing through memories,
searching for clues I might have missed. My father had always been
loving toward me, but there had been moments–brief, fleeting

instances–where I’d caught him looking at me with something like sadness in his eyes.
And then there was my wolf form–a rare pale gold that matched neither my father’s dark brown nor Catherine’s gray. I’d always assumed it was some genetic quirk, but what if…
“Rachel,” I said slowly, “I think you might be onto something.”
“Really?” She sounded surprised. “I was just throwing out a random thought.”
I put down my sketch pad, realizing I’d been drawing a woman’s face without even thinking about it. Not Catherine’s face, but someone else’s–someone from my earliest memories.
“The records say Catherine is my mother,” I said, thinking aloud. “My birth certificate, school documents, everything lists her as my biological mother.”
“But?” Rachel prompted.
“But what if those records were altered? What if my real mother was someone else?” The possibility was both terrifying and exhilarating. “It would explain why Catherine always treated me differently. Why she never seemed to feel any maternal connection to me.”
